What Does A Scientist Look Like?

<P CLASS="MsoNormal">Chinaemere (Chino) Igwebuike | MD/PhD Candidate</P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Chino was born in the British Virgin Islands and received his BS in Biology from the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). As an undergraduate student, he performed research at the UVI Agricultural Experiment Station and focused on identifying and categorizing plant viruses. As a current 6th year MD/PhD Candidate, Chinaemere’s PhD thesis project uses high-throughput genetic screening to aid drug discovery and therapeutic development. Additionally, Chinaemere is an activity coordinator for <I>Summer Training as Research Scholars </I>(STaRS), a 10-week summer program that brings together rising juniors and seniors from underrepresented minorities at colleges all over the U.S. to do biomedical research in BU Medical Campus labs.</SPAN></P>

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Luis Ramirez | PhD Student, Neuroscience</SPAN></P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Luis Ramirez is a 2nd year PhD Student at Boston University’s Graduate Program for Neuroscience and a member of the Ling Lab. His current projects investigate the nature of visual memories and how attention influences visual perception. He graduated from NYU Tandon with a BS in Science and Technology Studies and was a BP-ENDURE Scholar. His undergraduate studies ranged from history of science, physics, philosophy, and neuroscience in an effort to understand the intersection of these domains and how they’re utilized in investigations related to human perception. Out of a passion for learning and discovery, he hopes to improve the lives of those with sensory disabilities, inspire others to pursue similar endeavors in science, and inform others about the power of scientific investigation.</SPAN></P>

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Michael Rosario | PhD Student, Neuroscience</SPAN></P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Michael Rosario graduated with a BS in Psychology from the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix and was in the STaRS in the Brain Plasticity and Neuroimaging Lab (Summer Training as Research Scholars; BPN) program at BU for the summer of 2016. He is currently working on research at the intersection of public health and cognitive neuroscience, exploring the impact of perceived chronic stressors on the hippocampal memory system in older African American adults. He also completed his senior thesis in the BPN Lab at BU. At the University of the Virgin Islands he conducted research on the social and environmental determinants of men’s health in the Virgin Islands.</SPAN></P>

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Kiloni Quiles-Franco | PhD Student, Biomedical Sciences<BR> </SPAN><SPAN>Kiloni is a first-generation college student who was born and raised in Massachusetts. She holds two degrees, the first in Forensic Science and the second in Biology with a focus on Genetics and a minor in Psychology. Her previous research experience spans from disease ecology of flesh-eating pathogens to creating transgenic zebrafish with genetic knockdowns in developmental genes that are essential for normal sexual development in humans. She has also had experience working in a pathology lab as a Medical Laboratory Assistant at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She is currently in her first year of her PhD program and is rotating through a few labs before choosing the perfect fit for her doctorate. She hopes to begin a MD program after successfully completing her PhD.</SPAN> </P>

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Alicia Wooten | PhD Candidate, Molecular and Translational Medicine</SPAN></P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Alicia is a proud San Antonio, Texas native who earned her BS in Biomedical Sciences from Rochester Institute of Technology. . Her scientific interests include lung biology and understanding how the immune system functions against pathogens. She is Deaf and uses both American Sign Language and spoken English as modes of communication. Growing up, Alicia faced many obstacles related to her 'disability' and was told she would not be able to achieve much in life. Despite doubts, she learned how to navigate the world and change her disability into an ability. Alicia cares about making science communication and learning accessible to all minority groups and advocating for more minority groups, especially those in the deaf community, to pursue a career in science.</SPAN></P>
