What can Washington learn from Sci-fi?

The R Street Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy research organization. Our mission is to engage in policy research and outreach to promote free markets and limited, effective government.

Policy experts are increasingly interested in how science fiction is shaping emerging technologies today—and for good reason. Science fiction writers have historically been at the imaginative forefront of the next technological wave, often anticipating by centuries future developments in the field.  
Through authors like Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Orson Scott Card, Isaac Asimov, Neal Stephenson, Vernor Vinge and influential films and television shows like Star Wars, Star Trek, the Matrix, Firefly and Westworld, intellectuals have imagined the effect of technologies on privacy, free expression, cybersecurity, surveillance and social norms.  
Congress continues to hold hearings on emerging technologies to determine the role government should play. So can lawmakers learn from science fiction?
Pizza and beer will be served starting at 5:00pm, with the panel discussion beginning promptly at 5:30pm.
