Join us for a double-bill performance night on May 8!Viva Ruiz's art, performance, and activist practice reject moralistic stricture to advance a more sovereign and pleasure-driven future. Iris McCloughan appears in Whale Fall by Mike Lala, a multimedia monologue and meditation on human-cetacean relationships, environmental collapse, and the possibilities for organizing life after capitalism.Intermission and drink service follow Viva's performance at 7:30, with Iris McCloughan in Whale Fall by Mike Lala scheduled at 8:30. Tickets purchased for May 8 are good for both performances.VIVA RUIZ is the queer Latinx progeny of Ecuadorian immigrants and a community and nightlife educated advocate and artist from and based in New York City. The underlying thrust of all mediums is to dismantle white supremacy and exorcise the colonial / colonized mindset. Highlights include programming sex education and practical spirituality workshops as an invited curator for the New Museum’s "Scamming the Patriarchy" youth event and "ProAbortion Shakira: A Thank God For Abortion Introspective" a 5 week solo show at Participant Inc showing collected works and hosting conversations within the multimedia abortion destigmatization experiment THANK GOD FOR ABORTION.Mike Lala is the author of Exit Theater, winner of the 2016 Colorado Prize for Poetry, the chapbooks Twenty-Four Exits: A Closet Drama (Present Tense Pamphlets 2016) and In the Gun Cabinet (The Atlas Review 2016), the multichannel sound installation Infinite Odyssey (Pioneer Works 2017), and the opera Oedipus in the District (National Sawdust 2018, The Tank NYC 2019). Poems appear in BOMB, Boston Review, Fence, The Brooklyn Rail, Denver Quarterly, the PEN Poetry Series, and Hauser &amp; Wirth’s Ursula. www.mikelala.comIris McCloughan is a trans* artist, performer, and writer. Their performance work has been presented in NYC (JACK, CATCH series, Ars Nova), Philadelphia (Institute of Contemporary Art, The Barnes Foundation / Philadelphia Contemporary, FringeArts, Vox Populi), Chicago (Links Hall), Los Angeles (PURE O) and elsewhere. Iris was the winner of the 2018 Stanley Kunitz Memorial Prize from the American Poetry Review. Their chapbook No Harbor was the winner of the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Chapbook Series, administered by L+ S Press. Their poetry has appeared American Poetry Review, juked, Gertrude, and decomP, among others. Since 2014 Iris has collaborated with Eiko Otake as a performer and dramaturg for various projects. Iris has also collaborated with many other artists and ensembles, including Avery Z.
