About this event

You are your story. This is true for nonprofit leaders - even more so for BIPOC nonprofit leaders. When you as a BIPOC leader step into your authentic story and share it openly, it opens doors for you and the community you represent. WeThrive is a brave space where nonprofit leaders of color come to develop their story and authentically share their story with the support of a village of other BIPOC leaders.

Join a cohort of peer BIPOC nonprofit leaders as we grow, collaborate, and change the world together through our stories. Each cohort consists of four coaching circles with up to 8 participants. They will be open to BIPOC Executive Directors and CEOs and be co-led by Meme Styles and Sunjit Khamba.

Over the course of the cohort program, you will develop your story and learn how to share your story to build individual and organizational resilience, creating community through connection, garnering investment for nonprofit leaders of color and activating our collective power.

A Spring 2020 Race to Lead Central Texas (R2L) research project, conducted by the Building Movement Project and commissioned by Mission Capital and other partners, explored:

  • why there are so few leaders of color in the nonprofit sector,
  • the challenges Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) face as they reach for and attain senior leadership roles,
  • the consequences of this racial leadership gap in exacerbating historic community inequities,
  • and potential recommendations for creating intentional supports for BIPOC leaders.

The R2L Brief found that BIPOC executives need peer support, healing and advice. Most nonprofit executive coaching cohorts are designed and normed on dominant culture strategies and structures and do not address needs specific to people of color.

Who’s Invited:

FACILITATORS

Sunjit Khamba is a Senior Consultant on the Consulting, Learning and Leadership team at Mission Capital. He brings 8 years of experience designing and facilitating training programs for nonprofit leaders serving communities of color, through principles heavily guided by justice, equity, diversity, decolonization, and inclusion (JEDDI). Sunjit also serves on the leadership team of a nonprofit organization called Jelly Social, which supports the success of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) professionals. In his role, Sunjit is responsible for the development of impact programming, and facilitation of those programs for Jelly Social’s community of 4000+ BIPOC professionals. This has given Sunjit a great deal of experience leading BIPOC community groups, and the facilitation techniques required to ensure their full, equitable, and brave participation. Sunjit’s work is very well documented in a program he created, called Brave Voices Against Racism, which teaches BIPOC professionals how to advance in their career while using their position to fight against social injustice at the same time. A short video from the course is posted here, which really displays Sunjit’s ability to facilitate conversations with BIPOC community members: https://youtu.be/1-l6MZGU404

Meme Styles is the President and founder of an award-winning social justice nonprofit with 15 years of experience working in organizational leadership, social science and community organizing. Meme is responsible for numerous social justice-focused programs and projects in Texas and California. Meme is a powerful force in the ecosystem of diversity, equity and inclusion research and uses her lived-experience and tireless energy to encourage others to be anti-racist. Mrs. Styles is inspired daily by her husband and their four children. In her free time, Meme likes to go antiquing, playing racquetball and wine tasting with her girlfriends.
