PetSpace Trainer and Behaviorist, Katie McGuire digs into how dogs play.

Dogs love to play, but what differentiates good play habits from when things begin to get a little too rough? In this one-hour virtual seminar, Annenberg PetSpace Animal Behavior Specialist &amp; Trainer, Katie McGuire, CDBC, CPDT-KA, will explain typical types of dog play behaviors. She will tackle play style at different life stages, engaging with other dogs, interacting with humans, what play should look like, and when playtime crosses the line. McGuire will also cover what aggression looks like in dogs, why and how it happens, so that pet parents can better differentiate between playful and aggressive behaviors. This virtual workshop concludes with a Q&amp;A opportunity where participants can discuss their questions with McGuire.

About Katie McGuire, CDBC, CPDT-KA
Katie McGuire is an accomplished professional dog trainer, with more than 14 years of experience, but her training career and education began long before that. Her childhood consisted of as many animal activities as she could find, including care, training, and competing with horses, as well as volunteering for a local animal rescue. She also spent time training her own dogs in multiple activities such as tricks, agility, and obedience.
Katie received her BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. During her studies she worked part time as an On Set Safety Representative with American Humane Association, ensuring that animals were being treated humanely during film and television productions. While at UCSB, she also completed an internship training dogs for the entertainment industry. She continues her education by regularly attending seminars, workshops, and professional courses covering the newest methods in the field, always striving to improve her skills.
Katie’s professional career over the years has included training thousands of dogs both in group classes as well as through individual private sessions. She has held the position of Area Trainer for a pet supply store, training new trainers and overseeing training at additional locations, and eventually launched her own training business, giving her the ability to grow and develop her skills, as well as focus on dogs with problem behaviors, and training for competition dogs in different venues. Through her business she also worked as an independent contractor for several other training companies, teaching classes, creating new curriculums, developing marketing strategies, and even took the time to advise on the well-received publication, “The Big Book of Tricks for the Best Dog Ever.” Her previous video and in-person demonstrations include ACCESS Live, The Pet Collective, and The California Science Center. In 2020, Katie officially became the Animal Behavior &amp; Training Coordinator at Wallis Annenberg PetSpace, after serving as the exclusive group class trainer since 2018.
Katie is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), AKC Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog Evaluator, a member of The Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the Dog Trainers Alliance of Southern California, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, the Pyrenean Shepherd Club of America, and is a working member of the Behavior Collaborative for Human Animal Support Services. With her own dogs, she trains and competes in agility, conformation, Rally Obedience, and competition Obedience, garnering many wins, and competing at the national level. She continues her education by reading, attending seminars, and consulting with other trainers as often as possible.
