Matt Austin, the owner/winemaker from Grosgrain in Washington, will be here pouring and showcasing his Walla Walla wines.EVERY Thursday night from 6 to 8 pm, we host our weekly wine tasting, but this one will be extra special! Meet Matt, chat about winemaking in Washington, and sample his amazing wines!Matt began his professional life as an attorney in Los Angeles, where he met his wife, Kelly, a fashion designer. While practicing law, he developed a passion for wine, sparked by his exposure to Washington wines during a trip to Seattle. After realizing he didn’t enjoy law, he left his career and enrolled in the Northwest Wine Academy in Seattle. He started working as an intern at Savage Grace Wines in Woodinville in 2014 before moving to Walla Walla to be closer to the vineyard side of the industry.Upon arrival, Matt worked as cellarmaster at Dunham Cellars, gaining hands‑on experience in winemaking. In 2014, the Austins stumbled upon a bankruptcy auction of a small vineyard on the Southside of the Walla Walla Valley and purchased it the very next day. This became the foundation of Grosgrain Vineyards, which began production in 2018.The winery’s name, “Grosgrain,” is a nod to both the ribbed fabric pattern in Kelly’s fashion design background and the parallel rows of vines. Matt enjoys the collaborative, community‑driven nature of Washington’s young wine industry, and he sees the future of Washington wines as one of continued growth, global recognition, and greater variety diversity, especially with climate‑adapted grapes.
