2024 IN-PERSON PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER STUDIO IMMERSION PROGRAM

GROW YOUR POTENTIAL: DCAD’s Pre-College Summer Immersion Program is designed for high school students who are interested in pursuing an art and design education at the college level. During this one-week program, you will have the opportunity to learn what it’s like to study art in higher education, further your creative practice, and discover some of the many career options you can pursue. To help you deepen your studio practice and hone your career interests, DCAD is offering two one-week in-person commuter Summer Studio Immersion programs.

REALIZE YOUR POTENTIAL: Each major is led by one of DCAD’s experienced professors, who are all practicing professional artists and designers. Expect to be challenged throughout the week while creating portfolio-building work. Small classes enable you to work closely with professors and your peers, gain valuable experience in critiques and flourish in the inspiring environment that is DCAD.

EXPERIENCE COLLEGE LIFE: For 2024, all participating students will attend classes from 9 AM – 4:30 PM each day. Current DCAD second-year students and alumni will serve as Teaching Assistants for the week offering valuable support and insights on what it’s like to attend an art and design college.

PREPARE YOUR COLLEGE PORTFOLIO: Planning on applying to art school after high school? If so, then DCAD’s Summer Pre-College Studio Immersion Program is the ideal opportunity to work on your application portfolio, demonstrate your passion for art, and get one-on-one feedback from our professors.

Much like our degree students, as a Pre-College student you will have the choice of one of major which you select when registering:

Week 1 Majors are:

  • Introduction to Animation (beginner, some experience)
  • Character Design (traditional and digital) (all levels)
  • Introduction to Painting (beginner, some experience)

Daily Schedule:

  • 9 am - 10:30 am Major instruction
  • 10:30 am - 11 am Break
  • 11 am - 12:30 pm Major instruction
  • 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm Lunch
  • 1:15 pm - 2:30 pm Major instruction
  • 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm Short break and afternoon workshop
  • 4:30 pm - 5 pm Relax, work on projects, and early pick-ups/departures
  • 5 pm End of day, departure for all students

Mornings and early afternoon will be spent learning from one of our talented faculty with a morning and lunch break. Afternoons workshops on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday are designed to give you time to explore other media and practices. Wednesday, the group will visit one of our local museums to contextualize your own work.

Friday afternoon will focus on the final preparations for your group exhibition in DCAD's Toni & Stuart B. Young Gallery. Parents, caregivers, family, and friends are invited to join us at 4:30 pm on Friday for a reception and celebration of all you've accomplished during Pre-College.

Additionally, throughout the week, you will have the opportunity to experience life at DCAD and build your portfolio while immersing yourself in your creative practice.

DCAD's popular commuter option will be available for summer 2024. Students come and go daily arriving by 9 am and are picked up no later than 5 pm.

LUNCH: Students should plan to bring their own nut-free snacks and lunch and their preferred beverage.

SUPPLIES: Students will be provided with a supply list by June 15, 2024.

*** Class sizes for each major are limited. Register early! ***
