Communicating to Ensure Accessibility Across Digital Platforms

As we communicate more through digital platforms, we have an opportunity to ensure that everybody, and every body, can access that communication. We typically think about access as availability, but access also includes providing the means by which people with disabilities may read/hear/see a communication. Whether it is a doc, PDF, a website, slide deck, video, or an image, we must consider multiple ways to make communication accessible. In this session, Dr. Casey Boyle will overview the need for accessibility, some techniques for ensuring accessible practices, and survey examples of communication that provide good access.Instructions to join the webinar will be sent to registrants prior to the event.

Webinar Leader: Dr. Casey BoyleCasey Boyle is an Associate Professor in the <a href="https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/rhetoric/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Department of Rhetoric and Writing</a> at the University of Texas in Austin and Director of the <a href="https://www.dwrl.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Digital Writing &amp; Research Lab </a>where he researches and teaches digital rhetoric, media studies, accessibility, techno-poetics/ethics, and/as rhetorical history. He earned a BA at the University of Texas, an MA at the University of North Texas, and a PhD in the Rhetoric/Composition program at the University of South Carolina. His work has appeared in Kairos, Philosophy and Rhetoric, Computers and Composition, Technical Communication Quarterly, College English as well as essay collections such as Rhetoric and the Digital Humanities, Thinking with Bruno Latour in Rhetoric and Composition, and Kenneth Burke + The Posthuman. He is a co-editor (with Scot Barnett) for the essay collection Rhetoric, Through Everyday Things, (with Lynda Walsh) Topologies as Techniques for a Post-Critical Rhetoric, and (with Jenny Rice) Inventing Place. His book, <a href="https://ohiostatepress.org/books/titles/9780814213803.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rhetoric as a Posthuman Practice</a>, explores the role of practice and ethics in digital rhetoric and is available from The Ohio State University Press. Casey is currently working on a few projects. <a href="http://caseyboyle.net/portfolio/racing-to-empathy/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Racing to Empathy </a>(with Terrance Green) intervenes against implicit bias against Black girls in primary education through a video game based intervention and study; A Version of Access (with Nathaniel Rivers) concerns media and accessibility; Mediating Education examines expressive computing and subjectivity; and Environmental Media attends to a weird project about technology and nature.
