<h1>Webinar - Navigating Food Sources</h1><p>As a consumer there is a lot to take into account when navigating today’s food sources; the presence of toxic residues as a result of pesticides, over-processed foods packed with chemicals and sugar, and less nutrition in food as a direct link to the degradation of the soil. Confusing labels at the grocery store can be misleading to say the least and, often, even harmful to people’s health. </p><p>Please join us on August 25, 2022 at 8 am (PDT) / 11 am (EDT) as our invited experts will discuss how to make informed food choices, avoid common pitfalls, and make sense of confusing food-labeling terms. You will walk away with tools that will help you understand what’s potentially dangerous so that you can choose clean alternatives that won’t sabotage (or have a negative impact on) your health.</p><p>This is a Zoom Webinar. Lustig, MD, MSL</h3><p>Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L. is Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, and Member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. </p><p>Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist, with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He is one of the leaders of the current “anti-sugar” movement that is changing the food industry. Dr. Lustig graduated from MIT in 1976, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980. He also received his Masters of Studies in Law (MSL) degree at University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2013. He is the author of the popular books Fat Chance (2012), The Hacking of the American Mind (2017), and Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine (2021). He is the Chief Science Officer of the non-profit Eat REAL, he is on the Advisory Boards of the UC Davis Innovation Institute for Food and Health, the Center for Humane Technology, Simplex Health,Levels Health, and ReadOut Health, and he is the Chief Medical Officer of BioLumen Technologies, Foogal, Perfact, and Kalin Health.</p><h3>Russell M. Jaffe, MD, Ph.D., CCN                     </h3><p>Russell Jaffe is an internist, molecular biochemist, clinical pathologist, and diagnostician. Dr. Jaffe received his BS, Ph.D., and MD from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1972. He completed residency training in clinical chemistry at the National Institutes of Health (1973 – 1976), remaining on the permanent senior staff until 1979. He is board certified in Clinical Pathology and in Chemical Pathology. Dr.  Jaffe maintains clinical licenses to practice in a variety of states. Dr. Jaffe is the recipient of the Merck, Sharp &amp; Dohm Excellence in Research Award, the J.D. Lane Award, and the U.S.P.H.S. Meritorious Service Award. He was also named an International Scientist of the Year (2003) by the International Biographical Commission for his contributions to Medicine, Biochemistry, and Clinical Immunology. Dr. Jaffe teaches and lectures widely on nutritional immunology and treatment guidelines for chronic autoimmune and immune dysfunction syndromes. He has helped elucidate the causes and consequences of immune defense and repair functions in health and disease. His research interests focus on outcome studies based on effective, comprehensive care guidelines and practice parameters. </p><h3>Karen Malkin, NBC - HWC</h3><p>Karen Malkin is among the first National Board Certified Health &amp; Wellness Coaches in our country. Karen completed a fellowship in Precision Medicine and Genomics and is certified ReCode Brain Health Coach helping her clients prevent and reverse cognitive decline. Karen is also the founder of the food company Karen’s Homemade Health containing vegan protein blends, MCT oil and superfood protein bars. Passionate about integrative medicine and environmental health, Karen serves on the Philanthropic Council for the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Northwestern Medicine, as a board of director for the Environmental Working Group, Spiral Sun Ventures, and Gardeneers. Some of Karen’s specialty areas include brain health, environmental health, her 14 Day Transformation series, emotional eating, weight loss, the science of nutrition, high energy superfoods, smoothies, supplementation, managing cravings, and healthy lifestyle makeovers.                    </p><h3>Moderated by:  Melanie Benesh</h3><p>Melanie Benesh provides legislative and regulatory analysis of federal food, cosmetics, farm and chemical law. At Georgetown University Law Center, she was a Cutler Salzburg Fellow and served on the Georgetown Journal of International Law. After college, Benesh worked as a research assistant studying fair trade coffee in Chiapas, Mexico, and later as a community organizer for Voces de la Frontera in Milwaukee. She currently co-teaches a course on public interest advocacy as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center.  </p>
