Briefing from a new Access Now report  exposing protection gaps in digital transformation programs

In this webinar, jointly presented by the <a href="https://isoc-dc.org/" title="https://isoc-dc.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Internet Society Washington DC Chapter</a> (ISOC-DC) and the <a href="https://isoc-ny.org/" title="https://isoc-ny.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Internet Society New York Chapter</a> (ISOC-NY), Giulio Coppi will present the findings of <a href="https://www.accessnow.org/" title="https://www.accessnow.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Access Now</a>'s new report '<a href="https://www.accessnow.org/mapping-humanitarian-tech" title="https://www.accessnow.org/mapping-humanitarian-tech" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mapping Humanitarian Tech: exposing protection gaps in digital transformation programmes</a>'.People experiencing vulnerability as a consequence of conflict and violence often rely on a small group of humanitarian actors, trusted because of their claims of neutrality, impartiality, and independence from the warring parties. They rely on these humanitarian organisations and agencies for subsistence, protection, and access to basic services and information, in the darkest times in their lives. Yet these same actors can expose them to further harm. The report examines the partnerships between humanitarian actors and private corporations, how these often-opaque partnerships impact the digital rights of the affected communities, and offers recommendations for keeping people safe. BIOsGiulio Coppi has over 15 years of international experience across the humanitarian, human rights, and academic sectors. He has worked with NRC, ICRC, OCHA, and OHCHR, among others, and has experience responding to crisis contexts in several countries. At Access Now, Giulio is responsible for monitoring and advising on digital rights in the context of conflict and disaster; advancing protection from digital harm through international humanitarian law norms, customs, and principles; and promoting ethical approaches to the design and delivery of technological systems by private companies. Dr. Chelsea L. Horne is a Senior Professorial Lecturer at American University's Department of Literature. Her areas of research encompass communication, digital culture, information integrity, privacy, internet governance, AI policy, and cultural and performance studies. Horne is co-convenor of the Internet Society's US Washington DC Chapter.
