About this event

BIPOC Educators of all experiences are invited to participate in this 4-part discussion series that is focused on strenghtening your connectedness to other educators and your sense of belonging in the profession.

In this virtual discussion group, we will delve into the framework presented in "An Evolutionary Roadmap for Belonging and Co-Liberation" by Sonali Sangeeta Balajee.

Together, we will explore the six critical areas of belonging outlined in her work: beloved, be still, behold, believe, becoming, and belonging, co-liberation, and well-being.

These guideposts serve as a roadmap to understanding and cultivating spaces of belonging. As Sonali asserts, each area is interconnected, rooted in recognizing the beloved and our shared interconnectedness.

By engaging with one another and exploring the reading and supplementary mateirals, participants will deepen their understanding of the framework and explore practical applications within their educational contexts. The goal is to enhance ongoing personal and professional development in a trusting, low-risk space.

Open discussion and reflection will enrich the collective learning experience.

Noemí Cortés brings a wealth of experience to this book study. She has worked as a teacher at various grade levels, a teacher educator in higher education institutions, a district-level administrator, and an instructional coach.

Noemí spent eleven years in Arizona, learning a new system and way of being in education. This, along with study in Cuba and Brazil, has informed her understanding of what else exists as possibilities for the education system. Noemí believes all children have courage, brilliance, and power they do not often see in themselves. It is from that position that she engages with people.

As an independent consultant, Noemí has supported the pilot design and execution of a 6-month fellowship program for education leaders in Kansas City and Indianapolis and the Truth, Healing, and Equity Fellowship program for Chicago-based organizations interested in furthering their equity design work. In addition, Noemí provides leadership coaching and infrastructure development for start-up non-profit and charter school leaders.

Noemí believes that change begins with the hope that change can occur. She starts from a place of growing and building solidarity and community. In part, this belief is heavily informed by being a mother of two young daughters whose futures are yet to be determined.
