We Be Imagining Launch Party

We Be Imagining is a 10-part multimodal series of public programming that infuses academic discourse with the performance arts in order to foster critical conversations around race, gender, class, and disability. In partnership with community-based organizations in New York City, the series represents an effort to co-create a more inclusive knowledge ecosystem—to expand the parameters of what it means to assemble and of who ought to be heard. Fostering trust in democratic society requires repairing relationships with historically excluded communities and integrating multiple ways of knowing into the reimagining of our institutions.

Free and open to the public.This event takes place inside the The Art Start Portrait Project, SEE ME BECAUSE: a multimedia exhibition and platform for youth of color to ask the world to see them as they choose to be seen. $200 prize to the Open Mic winner. In partnership with community-based organizations in New York City, the series represents an effort to co-create a more inclusive knowledge ecosystem—to expand the parameters of what it means to assemble and of who ought to be heard.Advocate of Wordz is an award winning writer, educator, performer, curator, and resident artist at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café. He has been featured-in and covered by many major publications including CNN, The Los Angeles Times,PBS, and Univision. His program “Poetry in Performance,” has been a part of the 7th grade curriculum at Bank Street for Children’s School for ten years and he is a proponent of teaching kids how to talk their way out of detention.Sbarro Soundsystem formed out of a love of pizza /dance parties in New Haven, CT. They mix the vibrations of a U.K. movement with the wavelengths of Afro-Asia after colonial rule from Kenya to Hong Kong to India. In this way, Sbarro Soundsystem traces the routes of evolving sound system technologies and collectives from Jamaica in the 1950s. They connect that soul to London and New York by spinning a mixture of dancehall, hip-hop, dub, electronic and deep bass tracks to calculate a global pulse.
