Waves and Sound Modeling Workshop

STEMteachersNYC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that cultivates excellence in STEM teaching and promotes deep understanding and success for students through innovative, teacher-led professional development. Our weekend workshops for teachers are offered during the school year and multi-week workshop intensives occur in the summer. We welcome and encourage teachers from across the globe, the US, and the local New York City area!STEMteachersNYC is registered as a Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) provider with the New York State Education Department.STEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers, by teachers, about teaching, since 2011. STEM Teachers of New York City, Inc. (STEMteachersNYC) is an approved CTLE Sponsor (ID#23385), and vendor for the New York City Department of Education (#STE-068881); MTAC Qualified. Pre-service teachers may attend for free.STEMteachersNYC was founded in the summer of 2011 by a group of educators as a teacher-led study, support, and professional development group.  STEMteachersNYC membership has grown at over 30% per year and now stands at over 1,600 members. STEMteachersNYC is an affiliate of the American Modeling Teachers Association.

<H3>Waves and Sound Modeling Workshop</H3>

Attention high school physics teachers join us for a fantastic Modeling Instruction™ workshop led by some of the best, most experienced, and most influential Physics Modelers.   
The Waves and Sound Modeling Workshop will focus on all of the topics that are relevant and accessible as part of a typical algebra-based, high school physics course. Participants are required to have previously taken the Modeling Mechanics workshop. This Workshop will follow the Modeling approach quite closely, with participants alternating between student mode (performing paradigm experiments in groups, developing models, whiteboarding, reporting and discussing results, …) and teacher mode (considering content, pedagogy, classroom management, …). Much of the workshop will be upper high school level but many activities will be applicable to 9th grade students. 
Unit 1: The Oscillating Particle. In this unit we develop the model of an oscillating particle, its causal force model, the restoring force, along with its kinematical model, simple harmonic motion. We will develop graphical and mathematical representations by experimentally studying the motion of masses oscillating vertically on springs.  Energy considerations are also studied.
Unit 2: Mechanical Waves in 1-Dimension. We begin by connecting a string of particles together with springs to help develop the model of a wave being a disturbance propagated through the connected particles as they oscillate.  We move on to study the behavior of transverse and longitudinal pulses as they move and reflect.  After establishing pulse behavior, we use standing waves on a string to experimentally develop the wave velocity equation relating frequency and wavelength.  We finish by experimentally developing the relationship of the velocity of waves on a string and the linear density of the string along with the relationship of the velocity and the tension in the string.  In this unit participants will have the opportunity to build inexpensive (approximately $25) wave drivers which they can take with them. 
Unit 3: Sound. The model of sound being a pressure wave caused by longitudinally oscillating particles is developed.  We study the concept of resonance and the factors necessary for it in tubes, on strings, and on rods.  We use microphones connected to computers to study beats, harmonics, pitch and loudness. We finish the unit with the Doppler Effect.
Unit 4: Mechanical Waves in 2-Dimensions. We study reflection, refraction, diffraction and two-slit interference.  Initially the wave properties are investigated using wave (ripple) tanks.  After introducing the phenomena in the wave tank we will move on to light to further investigate the properties. Although light is not a mechanical wave it is much easier to study these phenomena using light.
In each unit we will use applets, practicums, probes, many demonstrations, and deployment activities.
At the end of the course teachers will be given digital copy of the latest version of all teacher notes, worksheets, labs and tests developed for the Modeling approach to Waves and Sound.

Schedule:
The workshop will run for 3 weeks. The workshop sessions will be from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on Monday - Thursday and Friday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, followed by an optional 'TGIF' social hour from 3:30 to 4:30.

If you register, you are agreeing to be photographed and to have your voice and image video-recorded. You are also agreeing to relinquish all your rights to the photographs and video recordings.
If you do not wish to be photographed or video-recorded - you must inform us at check-in. We will take one photograph of your face so that we can erase your image if we happen to catch it by chance during the workshop, and we will do our best to avoid you. Is STEMteachersNYC an approved NYC DOE CTLE Vendor?

I am interested in taking more than one workshop. Can I register for multiple workshops?
It depends: Many workshops overlap so look closely at the start and end dates.  Be sure to choose workshops that do not overlap, as reservations are not refundable.  If you need help deciding which workshop fits your needs best, please email the STEMteachersNYC Registrar (registration@STEMteachersNYC.org).
 
Is the full workshop fee or the balance of the workshop fee refundable? 
Refunds for the balance of the full workshop fee must be requested within one (1) week of payment and at least four (4) weeks before the start of the workshop. All such requests must be accompanied by an acceptable, documented explanation. Judgments about acceptability of explanations and documentation, and about whether or not a refund will be issued are at the sole discretion of STEMteachersNYC and are final. Refunds will not include fees charged on the initial payment by Eventbrite, credit cards, and/or banks.
 
Is my reservation/ticket transferrable?
Not without authorization, please contact the STEMteachersNYC Registrar (Registration@STEMteachersNYC.org) if you need to transfer your reservation to a different person/name, or if you wish to transfer your reservation to a different workshop.
