Warriors

The Visionary aspires to serve as an exciting and unusual venue where new work is developed and performed – sometimes inspired by the beauty of Otsego County and the history of the surrounding area. We believe that creating and experiencing high quality art should not depend on proximity to a major urban area. Since it’s inception in 2015, The Visionary (formerly named: THE CHURCH) has supported 141 artists and 36 collaborative projects. Residencies and Performances encompass the disciplines of Music (Rock, Jazz, Independent, Funk, Blues, Folk Rock, Synth Pop), Composition, Video / Projection Design, Puppet Theatre, Dance, Choreography, Comedy, Dance Film, Dance - Cabaret, Circus Arts,  Experimental Movement, Standup, Performance Art, and Theatre.

What it means to be a warrior through music and dance

While Gwen, Xenia and Johnny are no strangers to sharing a stage, this residency at The Visionary will mark the first time, they will get to create their very own piece together. Through early discussions of this new work, the trio has played with the idea of what it means to be a warrior including the paradox of fearlessness/fear, control, discipline, aggression, and love.
Johnny Butler is playing his saxophone with a wireless microphone to move with the dancers onstage blending the music, the dancer, the daydream. 
There is an innate curiosity, they each have with their respective mediums, a trait that will serve the deeper examination of the concepts of story and warriorship.

Xenia Mansour (she/her) is a dancer, mover, and performer based in NYC &amp; Chicago. She is currently a member of Katherine Maxwell’s Hivewild and BodyStories: Teresa Fellion Dance. She has worked with Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener, Angie Moon Dance Theatre, Gabrielle Johnson + Artists, Javier Padilla &amp; The Movement Playground, and experimental dance theater HOLDTIGHT’s site-specific and immersive show, Nourishment, in both Denver and NYC. Born and raised in Oak Park, IL she spent her formative years studying at The Academy of Movement and Music and performing with resident company, MOMENTA. She holds a BFA in Dance from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.Gwendolyn Gussman is a performing artist, choreographer, movement teacher, and artistic director of experimental dance theater company, HOLDTIGHT based between NYC and Colorado. 
As a performing artist, Gwendolyn has worked with companies and artists such as Shen Wei Dance Arts, Sean Curran Company, Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance, Vanessa Walters ‘Ripening’, Heidi Latsky, Control Group Productions, Cleo Parker Robinson, Roger C. Jeffrey, comedian Amy Sedaris, dir. Daniel Fish, dir. Ashley Tata, and others. 
 Gwendolyn holds her BFA in Dance from Tisch at New York University. Learn more at gwendolynhopegussman.com Johnny Butler is a Brooklyn-based, Grammy-award winning saxophonist, recording artist, arranger, composer, dancer, filmmaker, and technologist. Over the years, he has performed, written, and recorded with many of his musical heroes, including Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder, Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule) Wynton Marsalis, The Levon Helm Band, Tune-Yards, Sister Sparrow &amp; The Dirty Birds, and Escaper, among others.
