WAR FLOWER

The Danielle Georgiou Dance Group (DGDG), was founded in 2011 by Danielle Georgiou, and is a dance theatre company that works within the ideas of contemporary dance and physical theatre. DGDG’s work reflects Georgiou's interest in social and psychological issues, and in creating compelling images of a “new female.” The works break with the tradition of contemporary dance and tend to be more conceptual or narrative-driven. Whether collaborating or defining her own work, Georgiou looks for performers that constantly strive to transform themselves, either in image or skill. Technique is your foundation—not your identity.The Danielle Georgiou Dance Group was selected as Best Dance Company for 2016 by the Readers of D Magazine, and was named 2015’s Best Dance Troupe by the Dallas Observer.The Show About Men(2015) was named Best New Play or Musical and cited for Outstanding Creative Contribution for Choreography by the Dallas Fort Worth Theater Critics Forum Awards.NICE(2014), which premiered at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre for the AT&T Performing Arts Center's Elevator Project, also won for Choreography.DGDG’s 2014 season was listed as one of the top highlights of dance in Dallas in 2014 by The Dallas Morning News, TheaterJones, and Art&Seek, and in both 2014 and 2015 DGDG was nominated as Best Dance Company by D Magazine in their annual Best of Big D series. DGDG's 2012-2013 season was named as one of the Best Dance Performances of 2013 by the Dallas Morning News, and Georgiou was named Outstanding Female Director of 2012 by Critical Rant. Georgiou was named one of TheaterJones’Forward Thinkers for 2015.Danielle Georgiou (Artistic Director/Choreographer) and Justin Locklear (Producer/Conceptual Artist) both teach master classes and workshops in their individual and combined pedagogies, which are based on physical theatre, contemporary dance, and Viewpoints. They also both have rich performance and directing careers as freelance artists, and bring those experiences back to DGDG to create their unique take on contemporary dance theatre.

The Danielle Georgiou Dance Group will be presenting a new work, WAR FLOWER, January 19-28, 2017 at the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake.
WAR FLOWER examines the cyclic and savage laws of time, nature, and ritual. Referencing political and philosophical texts, political and ritual practices in animal ecosystems, in addition to original text by Danielle Georgiou, WAR FLOWER works to unlock the systems of human survival. In previous seasons, DGDG has investigated the relationship between culture and masculinity, femininity, youth, and sexuality. With this new offering, DGDG investigates the establishment of culture itself.
Human culture is a constant swirl of ritual, media, and instinct – as humans work harder to understand its nuances, the messier it becomes. WAR FLOWER inhabits the performance space like an ecosystem, surrounding the audience with new rites and rituals, mirroring the spiritual and physical language of human tradition. Colloquially, a “war flower” is someone or something that survives in the face of impossible odds, and DGDG seeks to demonstrate the methods that humans rely on, and to demonstrate that we are all surviving and all the same – all War Flowers.
WAR FLOWER is a collaboration between Danielle Georgiou, with Justin Locklear, Donovan Jones, Lori Honeycutt, and the performers of DGDG.
