Printmaking workshop at Palos Verdes Art Center taught by Self Help Graphics & Art

Palos Verdes Art Center, in partnership with Self Help Graphics &amp; Art, presents an introductory relief printmaking workshop Saturday, October 12. Students will view the current exhibition, On the Surface: Wallpaper from 1797 to the Present, for inspiration to create their own unique pattern design. Demonstrations and one-on-one instruction will include learning about the tools, vocabulary, and methods for relief printmaking. A goal-based project exploring design, color, symbols, and natural elements will encourage a unique wallpaper design. Participants will leave with their linocut block and prints on paper showcasing their unique designs.The workshop is taught by Dalila Paola Mendez, an Indigenous Guatemalan/Salvadoran queer artist born and raised in Los Angeles. Her work combines contemporary images with sacred references to indigenous iconography, knowledge, and folklore. Combining the new with the ancient, she explores ancestry as a way to reinterpret and navigate issues confronting our modern world. Through painting, printmaking, photography, and film her art visually narrates stories of resilience, elders, LGBTQ, women, and the environment. She is currently working on a series of Huipiles (Woven Blouses) depicting different contemporary narratives. You can currently see her work at El Segundo Museum of Art and TANA (UC Davis).
