Walking with Ghosts

In 2014, Billie formed a group called Thread and Word that delivers funded arts based projects through performed poetry. Through this group Billie uses digital media, sound and locative mapping to create hybrid, in person and digital walking events. Billie’s approach to multi-layered storytelling is influenced by her Andean background. Her practice allows for many voices, moving away from a linear view of the world and avoiding a linear interpretation.

Walking with Ghosts is a new multi-media artwork and programme of events and walkshops, interweaving past and present to explore the impact of war on Folkestone over the last 100 years. Our programme of eight different walkshops is curated by Elspeth Penfold in partnership with Fourth Wall Folkestone. The walkshops use poetry, ropes, walking and storytelling to explore the legacy of war. They are open to all and free but have limited places. You can also experience the Walking with Ghosts artwork at any time from 11am on Friday 11 November to 11pm on Monday 14 November 2022. The artwork is best experienced at dusk and in the dark, when the ghosts are most visible. Walking with Ghosts has been developed in collaboration with local artists, community groups, schools and arts organisations. It is part of the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund, a national programme of 22 artist commissions inspired by the heritage of conflict and created in partnership with Imperial War Museums and 14-18 NOW, the official UK arts programme for the First World War centenary. The Gateways Partnership is based in the School of Arts and School of History at the University of Kent. The curated program at Fourth Wall Folkestone has individual tickets for each event which can be viewed below when you register.
