Debby Irving will discuss her popular book, Waking Up White,on September 16th in Winston-Salem. Her book has been called one of the “most important books on race in recent memory” partly because herstory provides a context that allows white people to quickly grasp modern racism’s inner workings and enter into conversations with new awareness and skill.
Irving says she worked as a community organizer and classroom teacher for 25 years without understanding racism as a systemic issue. In 2009, a graduate school course, Racial and Cultural Identities, gave Irving the answers she’d been looking for and launched her on a journey of discovery. A graduate of the Winsor School in Boston, she holds a BA from Kenyon College and an MBA from Simmons College.
