About this event

One Light Global has partnered with sovereign elders and children of Shungopavi (Soöngopavi) village of the Hopi Nation, in a project to preserve traditional wisdom and regenerative practices, restore food security and support cultural, ecological and economic revitalization.

The Natwanhooyam project aims to bring the vision of the children and elders to life and includes the building of new infrastructure through the teaching of traditional building methods, dryland farming, seed saving, herbal medicine and plant wisdom, language preservation and cultural arts, as well as incorporating cottage industry, entrepreneurship, new regenerative and innovative design, permaculture practices and environmental stewardship.

Over the past year and a half, and through the help of donors like you put up a large frame house and made possible regular classes in traditional cultural arts, by providing materials and supporting teachers. Now Spring and Planting season have arrived and through your generous holiday donations we are ready to construct the next buildings, plant the fields and add to the agricultural land site.

We are honored to invite you to join us on April 25th & 26th 2020 to volunteer at the project site you have been supporting. It is a chance to get your hands in the dirt to plant and build alongside Hopi elders and children. To learn sustainable building techniques and new regenerative technologies, laugh, sing, and get creative together.

Bring the family! Kids are welcome but please understand this is an off grid construction site so they must be supervised by a parent at all times. All volunteers will be required to sign liability release waivers.

♥ IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROTOCOLS ♥

We are guests of the sovereign Hopi Nation, invited in service to collaborate on this project. Each village has visitor guideline, so we have included those for Soongopavi, as well as general etiquette for visiting the Hopi Nation:

* Possession or use of alcohol or drugs anywhere on Hopi Nation is expressly prohibited by federal and tribal law.

* Photography, visual or sound recording, and sketching/drawing are prohibited in all villages. Please do not ask. Violation of this right of privacy will result in a loss of film, possibly camera and other equipment. OLG volunteers are asked to leave phones in cars if in the village.

*All archeological resources and ruins sites located on the Hopi jurisdiction are declared off limits to non-members of the Hopi tribe. The disturbance and removal of artifacts and related objects on Indian and public lands is an offense punishable by both criminal and civil penalties.

* Do not move or remove anything from the ground.

* Please do not wander through village unless invited. Confine walking to streets. Do not wander on along footpaths or between houses.

* Modest Dress

*Our build site is outside of the village, down off the mesa on agricultural land. However in respect, dress should be modest: long skirts or long pants, no low cut tops. Please wear closed toed shoes at the worksite. Temperatures can be extreme, and locations are exposed. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and layers.

*There are few available resources on location - please bring at least 2-3L of water per day

*If you visit Hopi Nation as an OLG volunteer, this does not indicate permission to visit project areas without OLG or without express invitation and permission from the Hopi community.

* Please DO NOT bring pets on visits to Hopi Nation. It is not safe for the pets. There are loose dogs, snakes, hot weather, etc.

*As per village rules, photography, filming and any type of media is not permitted. We (OLG) always have express permission to use any form of public media and all such media remains property of Hopi Nation and any manner of reproduction or use or re-use without express permission of OLG / associated Hopi Nation elders, individuals and project leaders is not permitted.

Any approved media MUST include the Natwanhooyam Project and One Light Global names, proper photographic acknowledgement and Natwanhooyam Project reference and also remains property of Hopi Nation Natwanhooyam project leaders.

Please fell free to ask us if unsure :) We are so happy to be able to host this gathering !!
