Anna Jackson specializes in designing and facilitating collaborative learning experiences and first adopted the Liberating Structures repertoire in 2011. She has a particular focus on supporting social services systems change and promoting community-based mental health support.

Nancy White is a Liberating Structures maestro supporting distributed learning, teams, communities of practice, especially for NGO, NPOs and community organizations.

Some ways of describing Liberating Structures:

  • Tiny methods that make it possible to productively engage and benefit from complexity instead of flattening, ignoring, and pushing it away.
  • Novel patterns for organizing people to collaborate and mutually shape their work together.
  • Simple social technologies that aim to distribute participation more widely while drawing out greater difference and variation within groups.
  • Leadership tools that remove common obstacles to engaging more robustly in learning.
  • Familiar facilitation approaches that have been specified and ordered in a particular way.

By introducing tiny shifts in the structure of our interactions, LS may make it more possible to tap a wider set of voices, intelligence, creativity and imagination in groups of every stripe. Liberating Structures frequently unleash greater liveliness, difference, and vitality as each person learns to embrace more freedom and responsibility for themselves and the collective.
