Visible Mending Workshop
Overview
Visible Mending with Fussy Cut Reverse Appliqué
Have worn jeans, torn leggings, or an elbow hole you don’t want to hide? In this hands-on workshop, you’ll transform damaged clothing into a charming design feature using reverse appliqué. By cutting a window into the worn area and revealing a carefully chosen fabric underneath, you’ll turn everyday mends into whimsical, visible details.
Participants will learn:
- The basics of patching and reinforcing garments
- Beginner-friendly hand sewing techniques
- Simple embroidery stitches to secure and decorate mends
This class is beginner friendly, though some familiarity with hand sewing is helpful.
What to bring:
- One garment with a hole or worn spot you’d like to mend
- Suitable fabrics include jersey knits (t-shirts, sweatshirts) and wovens (denim, lightweight oxford shirts)
- Please avoid sweaters, as they require a different mending method
Materials provided:
- Needles
- Fabric scraps
- Thread
- Thimbles
Instuctions available in English & Spanish.
Enjoy complimentary snacks and refreshments while you work! Students are also welcome to bring their own food and beverages.
Leave with a repaired garment and the skills to continue visible mending at home—making your clothes last longer and look even better than before.
