Klum House is an online bag making school and shop. We offer patterns, kits, workshops, and specialty supplies to support makers in creating stylish, heavy-duty bags on a home sewing machine. With roots in the industrial sewing industry, we love teaching makers to work with rugged materials like waxed canvas, leather, and metal hardware to create professional-quality bags that are built to last. We believe in the joy, struggle, and triumph that comes from creating something from start to finish with your own two hands.

Join Ellie Lum of Klum House for a virtual social sew, where we'll share tips and tricks for sewing fabric masks for healthcare workers.

Join us this Friday from 4:30–5:30pm PST to sew fabric masks for healthcare facilities that are experiencing a shortage of personal protective equipment. Whether you’re already a full blown mask-making machine or curious about how to get started, we’ll gather virtually to share our mask-making tips and tricks.While Ellie will be answering questions and doing some mask sewing demos, this virtual get together will be less formal workshop and more of a social sew hour for mask makers across the country to connect, exchange resources, and feel a sense of solidarity. WHY FABRIC MASKS?While fabric masks are not the ideal, the CDC states that fabric masks are a <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/face-masks.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">crisis response option for healthcare workers when other supplies have been exhausted</a>. Fabric masks can be used as an extra layer of protective over N95 masks and then washed and sterilized for reuse. They can also be used for symptomatic patients when they arrive at medical facilities to help preserve medical-grade masks for healthcare workers. As someone from our maker community recently put it, “we are way past Plan A.” So let’s put our skills to use and help fill the shortage! MASK PATTERNSThere are lots of good mask patterns and tutorials available on the internet. At Friday’s gathering, Ellie will be sewing two styles of mask—one with elastic loops and one with fabric ties. <a href="https://www.klumhouse.com/blog/mask-making" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Check out our blog</a> for these specific pattern recommendations. Please feel free to use any pattern you are comfortable making and have the correct materials for. Time is of the essence, so it’s more important that you pick a pattern and get started than fret about finding the perfect pattern.FABRIC + MATERIALSMask-making fabric should be new, unused, breathable, and tightly woven, such as 100% cotton, quilting cottons, or cotton flannels. For the ear loops, use 1/8” or 1/4” elastic. If you don’t have elastic, you can substitute cotton twill tape, or follow a pattern that uses fabric ties.SAFETY CONSIDERATIONSOnly those who are experienced stitchers and in good health should make masks. Clear a workspace in your home free of food, smoke, pets, and kids. Launder the fabric you intend to use, ideally with unscented detergent. Before starting wash your hands thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Do not touch your face as you work. Put finished masks in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes.
