Virtual Lunch & Learn: Patent Process for Bioscience Startups

The Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI) is a non-profit research and economic development organization dedicated to growing Oregon’s bioscience sector.  In 2013, OTRADI launched the Oregon Bioscience Incubator (OBI), the state’s only bioscience-specific incubator, which is now home to eighteen promising startup companies, and supports an additional 60 affiliated startups throughout the state. The OBI is filling a critical and growing need in Oregon’s expanding bioscience industry by providing labs, offices, shared equipment, essential support services, entrepreneurship programs, and mentorship for diagnostic, digital health, health IT, medical device, and therapeutics startups. Together, OTRADI and the OBI are fueling Oregon’s bioscience industry by helping to commercialize innovative research, grow successful startup companies, and create high-wage jobs in Oregon.

US Patent and Trademark Office Supervisory Patent Examiners answer your patent process questions.

As an innovator and startup, do you have questions about the patent process? <h3>About the Speakers:</h3>James Alstrum-Acevedo and Pascal Bui-Pho

Jim H. Alstrum-Acevedo (left)Supervisory Patent Examiner, Technology Center 1600, United States Patent and Trademark OfficeJim H. Alstrum-Acevedo is a Supervisory Patent Examiner (SPE) in art unit 1654 in Technology Center 1600 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Jim joined the USPTO as a patent examiner examining pharmaceutical compositions in art unit 1616 in May 2005. Jim currently manages a team of twelve patent examiners who evaluate patent applications concerning the synthesis and use of small polypeptides having less than 100 amino acids, collagen, albumin, thrombin and other clotting factors, etc. Examples of peptides examined in art unit 1654 include insulin and GLP-1 derivatives per se and their use to treat diabetes and other metabolic disorders, cyclosporine and its derivatives, as well as Factor IX and its derivatives. Jim has served in career development details in the Office of Policy and International Affairs as an Intellectual Property Researcher and in the Patent Training Academy as a teaching assistant. Jim has a juris doctor from the George Washington University, a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a B.S. in Chemistry and Spanish from Illinois State University.Pascal M. Bui-Pho (right)Supervisory Patent Examiner, Technology Center 3700, United States Patent and Trademark OfficePascal joined the USPTO in 2005 as a Patent Examiner in the areas of radiant energy, image projection, and image analysis. Pascal currently serves as Supervisory Patent Examiner (SPE) of Art Unit 3793, managing a team of examiners reviewing patent applications in the fields of medical imaging diagnosis and image guided surgery. Pascal serves as Quality Point of Contact (POC) for his workgroup and Subject Matter Eligibility POC for Technology Center 3700. Pascal is an Excellence in Government Fellow. Pascal lectures on various intellectual property matters and regularly contributes to the implementation of various outreach and educational programs. Pascal has managed teams of examiners in the fields of gas turbine and power plants and has also served as Lead SPE for the Silicon Valley Regional Office, detailee to The Patent Trial and Appeal Board, a work assignee to the Quality Assurance Specialist division, and a SPE Trainer for entry level examiners in the Patent Training Academy. Pascal graduated from The University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and received his Juris Doctorate from The George Washington University Law School.
