With innovative technology comes new, debatable legal issues – Virtual Reality and Augmented Perception are no exception.  These technologies are becoming an increasingly indispensable part of interacting with society, and bring with them legal issues that developers, consumers, legislators, and lawyers alike must contemplate.  The Symposium will feature a range of experts to examine VR and AR technology, including how far it has come, where it is going, and what lawyers must understand about how it fits into our legal landscape.

Panel 1: The Technology - What are AR and VR? 
Distinguished Speakers: William Gee, Balti Virtual; Amitabh Varshney, University of Maryland at College Park; Harry Kerasidis, M.D., Chesapeake Neurology Associates
Virtual Reality and Augmented Perception have revolutionized modern technology from all perspectives, ranging from individual consumers to innovators and businesses.  Its capabilities have already reached sectors such as healthcare, gaming, and film, and will only continue to grow.  Panel 1 will provide a demonstration of the technology.  It will discuss what AR and VR are, how they are used in the real world, and where they may expand in the future.

Panel 2: Intellectual Property 
Distinguished Speakers: Elizabeth Gemmell, Marbury Law Group; Ngai Zhang, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman; Andrew Michaels, George Washington University School of Law; Nathan Robertson, University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law; Julie Hopkins, Womble Bond Dickinson
Virtual Reality and Augmented Perception have presented unique Intellectual Property issues that arise in the physical world and the digital world.  In the physical world, one must consider what, if any, part of the technology is patentable; and in the digital world, one must consider whether things programmed into or created in the virtual world are subject to intellectual property rules.  Panel 2 will discuss the IP issues inherent in VR and AR technology, and what consumers, innovators, and lawyers alike should know.

Keynote Speaker: Kosta Stojilkovic, Wilkinson Walsh & Eskovitz 
In ZeniMax v. Oculus, ZeniMax Media sued Oculus VR, alleging various IP claims associated with a VR device called the Oculus Rift.  Kosta Stojilkovic, trial counsel for Facebook, Oculus VR, and individual defendants, will discuss the case, including an overview of the issues and the litigation challenges faced.  Mr. Stojilkovic will survey other legal developments in the VR and AR space, and how this case fits into broader trends.
Lunch will be provided at this time.

Panel 3: Data Privacy
Distinguished Speakers: Anne McKenna, Penn State Law; David Opderbeck, Seton Hall Law School; Horace Anderson, Pace Law School
Virtual Reality and Augmented Perception have amplified the privacy issues associated with the digital age.  As they increasingly pervade everyday society, concerns about personally identifiable information, and how it should be handled, are presented for users and producers alike.  Panel 3 will discuss the privacy issues inherent with VR and AR technology in the current legal landscape and what lawyers need to know for the future.
