What is the function of dreaming?

Pierre-Hervé Luppi, Ph.D., President of the European Sleep Research Society, Research Director for French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and Head of Team “Sleep”, Université Lyon I, France

Dreaming occurs during sleep in particular during paradoxical (REM) sleep. The function of dreaming is still unknown but there is now a rising number of data showing that it plays a role in setting up innate and acquired complex behaviors. I will present my current hypothesis spanning over our lifetime from birth to the dawn of our life. I will use Human and animal data to construct my proposal.

Opening Remarks: Charles A. Czeisler, MD, PhD
Moderator: Clifford B. Saper, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Luppi's notable areas of scientific contribution include:

  • Defining the sublaterodorsal nucleus as a key brain region for generating paradoxical sleep and demonstrating that its neurons are largely glutamatergic
  • Demonstrating the role of the ventromedial medullary GABA/glycine neurons in relaying inputs from the sublaterodorsal nucleus to inhibit spinal motor neurons, causing muscle atonia during paradoxical sleep
  • Determining the key inputs to the sublaterodorsal nucleus from the ventrolateral periaqueductal gray matter and deep mesencephalic nucleus that inhibit the generation of paradoxical sleep
