Description:

Many counselors feel ill-equipped to deal with issues of substance use disorders (SUDs) revealed in counseling. This training will serve as an introductory foundation to discuss substance abuse as well as common co-occurring mental health disorders. Substance abuse is an important area for counselors to be equipped to screen, diagnose, treat, and/or refer out for more intensive services. After this training, counselors will have more knowledge on the DSM criteria for SUDs. Attendees will learn about different treatment modalities as well as the relapse sequence and strategies for prevention. Resources for clients who need sober support such as residential treatment, IOP, and 12 step programs will also be provided.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define Dual Diagnosis/ Co-occurring Disorders and the prevalence in the population.

2. Recognize DSM-V criteria to diagnose for Substance Use Disorders (SUDs).

3. Discuss screening and treatment modalities for integrated treatment of both mental health and substance abuse.

4. Explore and understand the relapse sequence, terms, and prevention strategies.

5. Understand different levels of care and sober support for referral and additional support in tandem with therapy.
