WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Video Intervention Therapy (VIT) is a method to help clients better understand and change how they interact with others. With the therapist’s support, the client looks at a video of his/herself interacting with someone else. What they and the other(s) do both verbally and non-verbally is reflected upon during and after watching the video. A variety of VIT techniques are used to deepen this reflection and awareness allowing the client to be better equipped to make changes in their relationships.

VIT can be used with individuals, parent/child dyads, couples, families and peer groups. VIT is practiced in a variety of settings including psychiatric clinics, residential treatment centers, pediatric primary care clinics, eating disorder clinics, substance abuse clinics, and domestic violence programs.

A typical VIT video is five to ten minutes and is usually filmed at home by the client. A predetermined interaction (such as playing together or eating a meal together) with a child, partner, family or peer is filmed and then brought to their therapy session. Videos can also be filmed in a therapist’s office, agency, or treatment facility.

Reviewing videos of clients interacting with others (children, partners etc) enables clients, with the help of their therapist, to see both helpful and unhelpful patterns in key relationships. VIT illuminates reflexive patterns that are often unconscious for clients in moments when the interactions were originally taking place. Video review with the therapist as a trusted guide, allows clients to take a step back from the relationship and look at what is happening in it with more objectivity, curiosity, and compassion.

This workshop will explain what types of videos are best to capture for VIT, how to initiate and complete the 7 steps of VIT video analysis. Participants will also learn and practice specific VIT techniques to use when reviewing video with clients to deepen therapeutic work, advance mentalization capacity and expedite treatment progress.
