Dr Lucy Ella Rose

Biography:

Dr Lucy Ella Rose is a Lecturer in Victorian Literature at the University of Surrey. She works on nineteenth-century literary and visual culture, specialising in creative partnerships of spouses and siblings. Rose is the author of Suffragist Artists in Partnership: Gender, Word and Image (Edinburgh University Press, 2018) and is currently writing her second monograph on Victorian sisters and sisterhood.

Talk abstract:

This talk focuses on the arts and crafts memorials created by Mary and George Watts on the site of Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village, focusing particularly on Mary’s more neglected work. It discusses Mary’s decorative designs for her masterpiece the Watts Cemetery Chapel, as well as her memorialisation of her husband in her curation of Watts Gallery, her cataloging of his work, and her publication of her diaries as a biography.
