Description

We are curating a one-night exhibition that will take place on March 25th, 2016 - Good Friday. Artists or groups of artists have been invited to create pieces for each of the fourteen Stations of the Cross. Each peice has been created specifically for the exhibit.

The exhibit is open to works that embrace varying perspectives, questions, and doubts. We encourage people from any faith background to attend. The exhibit is intended to create a multi-faceted space for contemplation and dialogue regarding the intersection of art and faith. A Sacred Space.

Origins

In the Middle Ages, devoted followers of Jesus traveled to the Holy Land to visit the actual sites associated with his “passion” - or the events surrounding the death of Christ. They would walk the “Via Crucis” or “Way of the Cross.” This was costly and many could not make the trek. Upon returning home, these sojourners would construct replicas of the places they had the privilege to visit for others to experience. Tableaus were created - sculptures, paintings, artifacts, and images depicting the places they had seen and visited.

In the mid-fifteenth century, the word “station” was first used for these interactive depictions of Christ’s journey to the cross. “Station” comes from the Latin statio, “to stare” or “to stand.” In other words, it means to stop and look. Our use of the word station today has essentially the same meaning. We want to create a meditative space where people come and engage the artwork that is presented through action, dialogue, and contemplation.

Tribe is a diverse community of people working out what it means to follow Jesus.  We believe in the priesthood of all believers.  That means there are no spectators.  Everyone is a minister with a part to play.  We are part of the historic Christian faith and willingly affirm the truth of its creeds.
