About this event

Love producing, but tired of cooking up bangers alone in your bedroom at 2am and wishing you had more humans in your life than VSTs?... ;P

LiveLab is here to create a welcoming and inclusive space where we can connect as producers, inspire and learn from each other, trade sounds and ideas, and co-create something dope together.

Whether you're just starting out or have been producing for years, LiveLab is a space where curiosity, creativity, and community come first.

Leave your ego at the door, but bring your skills & fire to the production!

What you can expect at LiveLab:

  • Connect, Network & Collaborate: Trade knowledge, build connections, and collaborate with others who share your passion for music.
  • Level Up Your Sound: Learn new production techniques, tighten your workflow, hone your sk ills.
  • Track Feedback Circle: Share your music and get constructive feedback from fellow producers. Grow and inspire together.
  • Group Beatmaking: Build a track together in real-time using Ableton Live. Each producer adds a sound, layer, or sample to a shared session. Afterwards, we share the Ableton file for friendly producer challenges - and prizes at the next event!

Who it's for?... From beginner to intermediate producers, beatmakers, loopers, and anyone who wants to exchange ideas and energy.

New to producing? You’ll feel right at home. Experienced? Come flex your groove and support others.

Bring your MIDI controller or just your ears – we provide the laptop, sound system, and projector.

Frequently asked questions

1. What exactly happens during the workshop?

This will vary from session to session, but generally a presenting-producer will share a production technique, workflow, or creative skill—usually demo’d inside a track they’ve made. They’ll walk us through how it works, why it’s useful, how it affects the mix… and how it bumps. ?

2. Do I need to bring a laptop or gear to participate?

Nope! We’ve got a laptop, sound system, and projector set up and ready to go. If you’ve got a controller, interface, or laptop you’d like to plug in for the group jam or track feedback, feel free to bring it—but it’s totally optional.

3. Is this event beginner-friendly?

Absolutely. If you're just getting started with beatmaking or Ableton, you’ll find this a supportive and welcoming space to learn. You’re encouraged to participate at your comfort level—no pressure, no judgment.

4. What if I don’t have a track to share for the feedback session?

No worries - you’re welcome to just listen, take notes, and soak up inspiration from other people’s work. Sharing is welcome and encouraged, but not required.

5. What if I’ve never shared my music before? Will it be awkward?

Totally fine. You’re in good company. Before the feedback session starts, we’ll offer guidance on how to give constructive feedback so it's helpful, not harsh. You can also let us know what kind of feedback you’re looking for. Sharing is optional, but if you’re ready, it’s a great way to grow.

6. What if I’ve never used Ableton Live before—can I still join?

Absolutely. While most of the jam and workshop will happen in Ableton, you don't need to be fluent in it to follow along. You’ll still pick up lots of insight and workflow ideas, even if you’re just observing.

7. Will I be put on the spot or expected to perform?

Nope. Participation is always optional. You can jump into the jam, share a track, connect with others, or just hang back and absorb — it’s all good. The vibe is collaborative, and you get to decide what you want to get out of the event.

8. Can I use another DAW besides Ableton?

Yup. While our group jam is built around Ableton for simplicity, you’re welcome to bring a track from any DAW for the feedback circle. Just export it or bring a bounce to share.

9. Is there parking or easy transit access nearby?

FriendsQuarters is located in Gastown, close to major bus routes and the Waterfront SkyTrain station. Paid street parking and parkades are nearby, but transit is recommended if you can swing it.

10. What’s the capacity—should I get a ticket early?

Yes—it’s a cozy venue and space is limited. We recommend grabbing a ticket early to lock in your spot, especially if you want to take part in the feedback or jam session.
