About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

When the tomb of King Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922 with all of its glittering treasures, it showed the modern world for the first time just how wealthy ancient Egyptians were. But how was Egyptology's most famous find pulled off by a self-taught archaeologist who was likely on the last excavation of his career? From drama in the desert to stories of cursed riches, it's time to uncover an epic saga that forever changed our understanding of Ancient Egypt.

Join New York Adventure Club as we unravel the captivating story of Howard Carter's 1922 discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamun, and how a watercolor artist from the United Kingdom would go on to lead one of the most famous archaeological discoveries in history.

Led by Archaeologist and Egyptologist, Stacey Anne Bagdi, our virtual quest will include:

  • An introduction to Tutankhamun, delving beyond the famous golden mask to uncover the story of how he became the most renowned Pharaoh in Ancient Egyptian history
  • An overview of Howard Carter's personal life, from his family background and passion for the natural world to what led Carter to Egypt
  • The dramatic beginnings of Tutankhamun's tomb discovery, complete with intense rivalries, the pivotal faience cup incident, challenges faced by Carter during excavations, and his complex relationship with sponsor Lord Carnarvon
  • A closer look at the excavation process, featuring prominent archaeologists from around the world who joined Carter's team
  • An exploration of the tools and techniques employed during the decade-long excavation project
  • What unfolded after the groundbreaking discovery, including disputes, sensational drama with worldwide newspapers, and Carter's unexpected resignation, which added an extra layer of intrigue to this historical narrative

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Stacey — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
