SUMMARY:

Part II: Understanding The Cause & Symptoms of Developmental/Complex Trauma

Typically, developmental and complex trauma result when care-giving or intimate partners prevent a child or adult from developing a healthy emotional connection to others, positive self-esteem, a belief that they have the right to be here, to have needs, and to get those needs met. In this presentation, Dr. Barnes will discuss the impact of epigenetics and transgenerational transmission of trauma throughout multiple generations in a family. He will also discuss the association of ACES (Adverse Childhood Events) and symptoms of developmental and complex trauma. He will discuss the signs and symptoms that individuals with developmental and complex trauma will present when starting treatment. Finally, he will discuss clinical interventions that work to resolve developmental and complex trauma symptoms.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Participants will be able to identify the clinical differences between developmental and complex traumatic stress.
  • Participants will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of developmental and complex traumatic stress.
  • Participants will be able to recognize the medical and emotional problems that can emerge as a result of ACES.
  • Participants will be introduced to the NeuroAffective Relational Model (Heller & LaPierre, 2014) as a valuable clinical framework for working with developmental and complex traumatic stress.
