Day 1
Day 1 of this workshop, you will learn how to use play therapy theory to understand and conceptualize entire family systems and interaction patterns. You will learn several ways to engage parent and caregiver support of individual and family play therapy treatment modalities. The workshop will provide a basic understanding of theories of family play therapy and how to overcome barriers to family engagement.

Day 2
On Day 2 of this workshop, participants will learn about the impact that high-conflict family dynamics have on children and families served and how play therapy can address these needs. Participants will learn best practice strategies to ensure they are protecting themselves legally and ethically while still providing quality care to their clients. Participants will engage in hands-on learning to practice play therapy interventions and strategies to utilize in sessions with clients.

Workshop Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

Friday-Day 1:

  1. Conceptualize family systems incorporating at least 1 theory of play therapy
  2. Understand and identify minimum of 3 evidence-based reasons family involvement and support are critical to success of play therapy
  3. Identify and utilize at least 5 tools for building engagement, understanding, and rapport in families with play therapy theories, modalities, interventions, and overall treatment plan.
  4. Understand the framework and general use of 3 theories of Family Play Therapy
  5. Understand and utilize interventions from at least 2 theories of Family Play Therapy
  6. Have understanding and confidence in communicating to parents “at-home” play therapy interventions or activities based on research to use with any child to enhance and promote relational attachment and overall resilience of children and families

Saturday Day 2:

  1. Participants will recognize at least 4 dynamics of high family conflict and its impact on children who may present for play therapy.
  2. Participants will identify at least 3 dynamics of high family conflict and its impact on the adults who may be seeking play therapy for their children.
  3. Participants will demonstrate an understanding of at least 3 best practices for play therapists in high-family conflict cases.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of 3 ethical considerations for therapist’s roles, responsibilities, and boundaries.
  5. Utilize 4 play therapy techniques and interventions for working with children impacted by high family conflict.
  6. Effectively use 3 techniques for documenting family therapy sessions.
