This talk will focus on open source initiatives that bring innovative ideas to cybersecurity modeling and simulation.

By all recent measures, the cybersecurity workforce is woefully understaffed. According to (ISC)², the cyber workforce gap in the United States was 377,000 open positions in 2021. The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has been working with the U.S. government to development novel approaches designed to shrink this gap. This talk will focus on open source initiatives that bring innovative ideas to cybersecurity modeling and simulation, assessment, and competitions What Attendees will Learn:<ul><li>Understanding of the challenges facing the cyber workforce and how to build engaging content that will help close the workforce gap</li><li>Where to find open source projects developed by the Software Engineering Institute to build cyber exercises, training labs and simulations</li><li>Hands on experience that can be immediately applied to workforce development initiatives in their own organization</li></ul>Who Should Attend?<ul><li>Software Developers</li><li>Cyber Infrastructure Specialists</li><li>Instructional Curriculum Developers</li><li>Cyber Workforce Developers</li></ul>About the SpeakersMatt Kaar is a team lead and cyber exercise developer at the SEI. He joined the SEI in 2010 and currently serves as the project lead for the President’s Cup Cybersecurity Competition. Sponsored by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the competition is designed to identify and reward the best cyber practitioners in the U.S. federal government. Matt also serves as an adjunct instructor at CMU’s Information Networking Institute where he teaches graduate students how to apply their cybersecurity skills in real-world scenarios.Jarrett Booz is a cybersecurity engineer at the SEI. He joined the SEI in 2018 and currently serves as the technical lead for the President’s Cup Cybersecurity Competition. Jarrett has developed dozens of hands-on cybersecurity challenges in addition to building infrastructure to support cybersecurity exercises and competitions for federal government partners.
