Learn how to use emoji in your coding and analysis to tell stories and explore relationships in your data

Using emoji in our coding and analysis stages of research allows us to go beyond mere sentiment or list-making. This session will show how to use emojis in a very simple and affordable software program: <a href="https://www.quirkos.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Quirkos</a>, as well as learning what traps to avoid. Learn how the use of emoji in your coding and analysis can be used to tell stories, provide analytical depth and show a different perspective of your data in ways not always feasible with words alone. <a href="https://anujacabraal.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Anuja Cabraal</a> is an experienced qualitative researchers, with close to 20 years worth of experience. Anuja trains and teachers others about qualitative analysis and qualitative analysis software. She has been working on Emoji analysis for qualitative methods for close to two years now, and has developed a framework for thinking and using emoji in the coding and analytical stages of research. Dr Cabraal will talk about the benefits and pitfalls to avoid for those starting out using emoji for analysis, with her collaborator Lauren Gawne. Lauren is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Languages and Linguistics at Latrobe University, Australia. Lauren&#x27;s research focuses on the use of gesture with speech and the cross-cultural variation in gestures. Lauren also works on the use of emoji, critical approaches to research data and the grammar of Tibeto-Burman languages. This will be a two hour session, delivered via Zoom. The session will run on Thursday 21th of July, 9:30 am-11:30 am UK time (BST).
