Using Cloud Services - DropBox (Intermediate)

TheMadTech Ed Seriesis an annual offering of 10 technology workshops to build the technology-based skills ad knowledge of nonprofits and small businesses. The workshops are free to the general public and are open to anyone. The how, where, why, and what you say is vastly important to how you accomplish your day-to-day tasks, and critical for your short and long-term goals. This year, 2020, the MadTech Education Series (MadTech Ed) focuses on making the nitty-gritty of better communications easier by addressing the tools, technology, and techniques for making you better.Schedule the entire series to get powered up and emboldened or take the sessions that matter most to you.The series workshops do build on each other to grow your understanding of and use of techniques and technology, but each can be used independently, as well. This series is a collaborative effort betweenMadison Public LibraryandCollaboration for Good. The series is also supported by a gift throughMarvin J. Levy Fundmanaged by the Madison Public Library.

MadTech Ed Series

Let's start with the assumption that you already know what 'cloud services' are. You might not be certain about which cloud services will benefit your nonprofit the most— cloud storage, online donation management, accounting, etc., but you understand the concept that 'in the cloud' means NOT IN YOUR OFFICE. And you may also understand some of the related concerns to that.

Nonprofits are experiencing increased demand for transparency, and enhanced use of technology, but still face the reality of restricted and or limited budgets. Many nonprofits, prehaps even yours, are exploring 'cloud-based services' in response to those demands. The service have monthly or annual costs, some are free, you don't have to worry about maintenance, upgrades, or nearly as much downtime. But you do have to consider which services do you want to start with. What makes the most sense for your nonprofit? 
Well if you're thinking about storage, file-sharing for your organization you've got a few options, but Dropbox and Google Drive are two of the more well-known options.
Our first workshop on Cloud Services deals with Dropbox. Over 400 million people around the world use Dropbox to store, share, and syncronize their files while gaining anywhere access. Dropbox takes care of security, interface upgrades, backups, and all the other headaches of file storage. 
This workshop will discuss various methods your organization can take advantage of Dropbox. File sync is awesome, but not if you're on a laptop or desktop with limited storage (1TB or less). How do I set permissions so that Sheila can edit, but Bob can only read? Can I set-up a Drop area with filing scripts? The workshop is only an hour, so we won't have time to hit all the very cool things you can do with Dropbox, but we'll get you started and brimming with ideas of how you can better use Dropbox in your nonprofit.
The second workshop in this two part series will explore Google Drive, as both an alternative to and complimentary system with Dropbox— Using Cloud Services - Google Drive (Intermediate) on Mon, 20 June 2016.
