User-focused Accessibility: Designing beyond standards

The Boston Chapter of the User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA) provides a forum for usability practitioners to share techniques and experiences. We attract a variety of people: newcomers to our field and experienced practitioners, as well as distinguished professionals who have been defining and shaping the field of usability for decades.We host a highly active community for individuals and professionals interested in usability, user experience design, and their many related fields. Membership is free, and we invite you to take advantage of all the benefits membership offers. Join us for UXPA Boston's April Meeting and learn how to create more inclusive products and services  with a user-centered design approach

We know how important accessibility is to make sure we’re not excluding any of our users. But how can we know if our products and services are truly inclusive? Is it following a prescribed list of criteria, or meeting the minimum legal requirements? Too often, websites might “check all the boxes,” but their users are still unable to meaningfully engage with their product. In this session, we’ll look at what it means to shift our focus from compliance to a user-centered design approach to create better, more inclusive products and services.

Janell Sims, Digital Accessibility Consultant, Harvard UniversityIn my 12 years at Harvard, I’ve guided diverse teams through digital transformations and advocated for user-focused, accessible experiences in everything we do - in every communication and on every platform. I’ve built long-lasting communities of support and driven engagement and collaboration at every level, from administration to stakeholders to leadership. I’m excited to be a part of an important new initiative to incorporate the principles of accessibility and inclusive design into all aspects of the digital experience at Harvard.Andy Hollenhorst, Digital Accessibility Consultant, Harvard UniversityI came to Harvard from Sallie Mae bank, where I worked as a user experience researcher and accessibility lead. Before that, I worked in a content strategy role at TripAdvisor. I hold an M.S. in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a dual MBA/M.S. in Human Factors in Info Design from Bentley University.

<h3>How to attend remotely </h3>Anybody registered for the event will receive an email with a link with details on how to join the online meeting. Only individuals registered for the event will be able to join the meeting. You are highly encouraged to register with the email associated with your Eventbrite account; doing so will make your access to the event link easier. When the presenter begins, the meeting will be locked to any new attendees to prevent disruption.All attendees are encouraged to remain on &quot;mute&quot; during the event, except when called on to ask a question or during open discussion/networking time.
