Tesseræ is a platform connecting critical multidisciplinary research, education, art, communication and project development in urban, territorial and social fields.

Tesserae Urban Social Research

The second Mehringplatz Urban Reconnaissance Laboratory takes place in the framework of the <A HREF="http://www.supermarkt-berlin.net/en/event/platform-coops-start-your-own/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Platform Coops </A>event. We will employ two exercises,  “<A HREF="http://exercises.oginoknauss.org/wiki/market-city" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Market City</A>” and “<A HREF="http://exercises.oginoknauss.org/wiki/cyber-city" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CyberCity</A>”, to investigate the effects of ICT and social media on urban economies and how digitally mediated interactions affect urban space.  With an eye at the negative consequences in terms of precarisation, dispossession and gentrification, and one at the emancipatory potential for distributed and redistributive economic models, we will explore Berlin’s urban space as a prototypical interface between physical and virtual world. A hybrid geography which translates an immense variety of acts and behaviours into data and informational architectures.

<A HREF="http://exercises.oginoknauss.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Urban reconnaissance</A> is a methodology developed by Ogino Knauss to disentangle the complexity of factors determining urban form and identity. It is based on a matrix of 64 different definitions of the word “city”, each one completed by a related exercise of spatial assessment. The UR toolbox is employed for a steady activity of workshop and urban explorations stressing the necessity of a holistic multidisciplinary approach for the comprehension of urban issues. 
The workshop is organised in collaboration with Supermarkt and Agora and is part of the EU Erasmus plus  program <A HREF="http://eulerproject.eu/2016/07/05/switch-on-mehringplatz/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mehringplatz Anknipsen</A>.
