About this event

This is an introduction to drawing the human figure in an urban sketching context. This class builds on the Intro to Urban Sketching class (but can also be taken on its own). Urban sketching is the practice of on-site observational, idiosyncratic, or impressionistic drawing and painting, usually in the form of sketchbook pages, using portable art media. In short, it's drawing what's around you, and using your direct experience to create a (usually) small artwork on-site, in the moment. Our territory will be the Wicker Park neighborhood, in and around instructor Laura Noble's art studio in the historic Flatiron Arts Building. We will gather at the studio at the start of class, and then venture out nearby to enjoy and sketch indoors and outside, as you like. We may explore local coffee shops, bookstores, rooftops, parks, architectural views, nature trails, and other unique spaces and views. We will compile portable artworks that can be a collection in themselves or fodder for future studio paintings. Sign up for just one session, or get a deal when you sign up for more sessions (see schedule).

Note: some extra spending money (maybe $15-$20)may be useful, in case you'd like to sit and sketch in a cafe or restaurant. It's good manners, and there are some lovely places whose food and beverage is worth trying! (must be 21+ to buy alcohol, of course). You are not required to sketch indoors, and there are many wonderful outdoor locations we'll visit, in addition to the established businesses, such as bookstores and cafes. And always make sure your supplies and gear is easily portable, and appropriate for outdoor weather.

Drawing from a model in the studio- a great way to practice figure drawing is to have someone hold still, but we will practice drawing people who aren't holding still for very long...

(if you are interested in deepening a figurative drawing practice, come to Studio LMN for our regular evening Drawing Sessions with models- see our other listings for more on that!)

Frequently asked questions

What do I bring?

Bring your own art supplies. Usually, a sketchbook, pencils, pens, including fine liners, fountain pens, or ballpoint. Possibly a portable watercolor kit (including water brush, cloth or napkins). I've kept mine as simple as sketchbook and one or two ballpoint pens, or it could be more complex.

What is the parking situation?

Parking is on-street, and you may want to give yourself a few extra minutes to find a spot. There is metered parking on all three of the major streets at this intersection, but finding an open spot can take patience. Milwaukee is the most convenient, location-wise.

Is the building ADA accessible?

Yes, we have an elevator, however, it is the old-fashioned kind you'll need to open and close the doors manually. It works, and it's up to code, and we hope it helps!

Refunds?

We only offer class credit for same-day cancelations. If you give us more than 24 hours, you can choose a refund, or simply hold on to the credit and come to a later class.

Public Transit Options?

The Blue Line Damen stop is just across the street from the Flatiron, and very convenient. There are also at least two or three buses with stops right nearby on North, Damen, and Milwaukee.
