Course Description

Participants will learn about the six FDA-approved medications used to treat tobacco use disorder. Attendees will learn dosing and administration best practices, including evidence-based approaches for combination pharmacotherapy, including applications for populations with underlying behavioral health conditions.

Instructor Information

Dr. Lisa Kroon is a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Vice Dean of Clinical Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy. She also serves as the Assistant Chief Pharmacy Office of Clinical Innovation, Education and Research for UCSF Health. Dr. Kroon co-directs the UCSF Fontana Tobacco Treatment Center where she has been a smoking cessation provider for over 15 years. Her current research interests include evaluating the impact of pharmacist provider status and expanded scope of practice, diabetes therapeutics, tobacco cessation, and innovative pharmacy practice models.

Educational Goals

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Design a smoking cessation regimen using combination pharmacotherapy.
  • Describe considerations for how to tailor smoking cessation medication regimen based on patient-specific considerations including concurrent behavioral health conditions.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the six (6) FDA-approved medications used for smoking cessation, including their mechanisms of action, dosing, adverse effects, and general guidelines for use.
  • Describe two (2) clinically significant drug-smoking interactions with tobacco smoke and their mechanism for interactions.

Who Should Attend: This training is designed for administrative and/or clinical staff of Alameda County Public Health Department-contracted provider organizations and Alameda County Behavioral Health-contracted substance use treatment and mental health programs. However, all staff are welcome to attend.

Course meets the qualifications for 1.0 hour of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s, LEP’s, and SUD Counseling Staff as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP).

Please note: To receive CE credit (if eligible) or a certificate of attendance, attendees must be present for the entirety of the training and complete the post-test/evaluation. CE credit is only available for individuals licensed in the state of CA.
