Columbia County Historical Society encourages understanding, knowledge, and preservation of the County's culture and heritage through acquisition and conservation of historic artwork, architecture, properties, objects and documents, and through the sponsorship of research, publications, exhibitions, and educational programs.To help achieve its mission, the CCHS owns, maintains, and interprets collections and buildings of historical significance, and operates a museum and extensive research library.

A  look at historic wedding dresses unveiling society and history across time.

The New York State Museum has a good representation of wedding gowns thatdemonstrate the changes in fashion. These gowns reveal information concerning theritual of choosing a wedding garment and planning the event. By looking carefully atthese gowns’, we can understand much about our society and history noting changesacross time. The wedding dress is an expression of the bride-to-be’s identity and canrepresent her place in society, her hopes and her dreams. Because we can identify thewearers of these garments, we can place them in the context of their time. This talk willexamine a selection of our collection. Come walk down the aisle of history and gain apeek into the closets of the NYSM’s clothing collection. Connie Frisbee Houde is the curator of the NYSM’s clothing and textile collection. Shehas worked in the museum field since graduating with her master’s degree in the early1970’s specializing in the identification, care, handling and exhibiting of period clothingand textiles. She began her career as the director of Historic Cherry Hill culminating inan exhibition, Not Just Another Pretty Dress held at the Albany Institute of History andArt. Working as a consultant Connie assisted may museums across New York Stateidentify and care for their clothing collections. She has led workshops in the care andhandling of our precious textile heirlooms. She has been at the New York Statemuseum for the past 15 years.
