Until Help Arrives (UHA) is a free, 3.5 hour training that prepares you to be able to jump in as an active bystander in an emergency and support the wounded until professional first responders arrive.

The training is an interactive course, mixing lecture and hands-on practice of the following essential lifesaving skills.

  • Situational Awareness: Stay alert, identify threats, stay safe.
  • Identifying Life Threats: Know what to look for and act fast.
  • Bleed Control: Techniques like tourniquet use and wound care.
  • Injury Management: Proper ways to move and position the injured.
  • Psychological Support: Comforting the wounded in distress.
  • Efficient 9-1-1 Communication: Ensure the right info gets through, fast.

This training was developed by the Arlington County Fire Department. Trainings are coordinated by the Department of Public Safety Communications and Emergency Management and taught by volunteers from the Arlington Community Emergency Response Team.

This training is open to anyone who lives, works, goes to school or church, or spends a lot of time in Arlington County, Virginia.


What to Bring

Participants should bring a notebook and a writing utensil. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that allow you to practice carying and moving dummies as well as putting on tourniquets on one another.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to the training location? Is there parking?

Arlington Mill Community Center has a parking garage that offers 4 hours of free parking. Several ART and Metro buses stop in front of the Center. Can I bring snacks and water?

Yes. Feel free to bring energy bars, small hand-held snacks and water. We will have breaks throughout the course so you will have time to eat and drink between instruction and practice. Please make sure to wash your hands before you use the training supplies so they remain clean for others.

Will there be breaks?

Yes, there will be a few 5-to-10 minute breaks throughout the course.

I registered but can't make the class anymore. How do I cancel?

Check the email sent to you upon registration. Click on Go to My Tickets. If you registered with your Eventbrite account, login and cancel your registration. If you don't have an account, click on Email me a login link, enter the email you used to register. Open the email & cancel your registration.

Is there an age minimum required to take this class?

No, there is no age minimum required to take this class. However, parents and guardians of teens wanting to take this course should note that this course covers sensitive topics, including death, major bodily injury, blood, and will contain graphic images of injured persons for educational purposes.

Does this training grant Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or certification?

No. We do not grant CEUs or certifications upon completion of this training. This training is meant to improve community preparedness in our community through teaching how to save lives during emergencies until first responders arrive.

How can I learn these skills if I don't have the time or availability to take this course?

We will offer a shorter version of this course, which only focuses on hands-on practice in July and November. Is the training wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The event will take place at Arlington Mill Community Center. All entrances of the Center are wheelchair accessible, and the Center has accessible restrooms. There are elevators to take you to the training room.

Can I bring my friends, family, or colleagues to this training?

No. Instead, send them this event page so they can register for this event. Our training room only accommodates up to 30 students and we will only have enough instructors to accommodate 30 students. Everyone attending this event needs to register.

I am not physically able to lift of carry dummies or people. Can I still take this training?

Yes. This course is open to all people of differing abilities. There will be portions of the hand-on practice where you will have the opportunity to carry, drag, and lift dummies. You are welcome to observe others as they practice these skills or partake as much as you are comfortable doing.

I can't make this class. Will you offer this class again?
