Unlocking the Power of Community: Addressing Loneliness

Symposium Mission

Our symposium mission is to explore the critical role of social connectedness and meaningful interactions in supporting the recovery experience through a Peer lens. Through our review, we've identified the profound impact of isolation stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and the imperative of social distancing, creating a perfect storm of loneliness.

We aim to address the far-reaching and sustained effects of this loneliness, recognizing its potential to derail recovery and expose individuals to trauma and repeated cycles. By convening professional peers, experts and stakeholders, we seek to develop strategies and solutions to mitigate the impact of loneliness and foster resilience in the recovery journey.

Symposium Goals

  • Identify root causes and dimensions of isolation and loneliness to gain a comprehensive understanding of their multifaceted nature.
  • Redefine 'community' to make it scalable and adaptable to diverse dimensions of loneliness, beyond traditional boundaries.
  • Develop proactive interventions leveraging Peer support to address loneliness, grounded in empathy and shared experiences.
  • Advocate for policy reforms that reinforce proactive responses and pave the way for ongoing research and innovation.
  • Establish a robust quality-of-life framework to measure the impact of initiatives, ensuring continuity and effectiveness.

Mission Statement:

Baltic Street AEH, Inc. is committed to providing peer recovery, person-centered, trauma informed, and compassionate services to those with mental health lived experience.

Baltic Street AEH Inc., Vision:Our vision is to drive a cultural transformation within the mental health community by advocating for the underserved, educating for change, and inspiring wellness. We approach our role with cultural humility and mindfulness of oppressive systems.

Our History

In 1996, the work between peers and clinical staff of South Beach Psychiatric Center resulted in our first contract from the NYC Department of Mental Health, which identified us as an independent agency.  People living with mental health histories provided services for clients, and a revolution took place: the peer-to-peer model. In our first six years, we expanded from one program to 13 programs (and still growing!), and from one full-time and four part-time staff members to over 100 full-time, part-time and trainee staff.  We are now the largest Peer Agency in New York State. We provide housing, employment, training, entitlements, education, empowerment, and self-help skills, which are essential to an independent and meaningful life in the community.
