Description

The Museum Accessibility Consortium (MAC) and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, invite you to a Universal Design Workshop.

The seven principles of Universal Design (1997) provide a philosophy and framework for creating inclusive and accessible places and experiences. Following a curatorial tour of the Cooper Hewitt's acclaimed exhibition Access + Ability, the workshop brings together educators, curators, and spatial and interactive designers to examine how exhibition developers have used Universal Design in their work for museums and sites of life-long learning.

From 2:00- 2:45 Cara McCarty, Cooper Hewitt’s Director of Curatorial and the curator of Access+Ability, will lead a tour of the exhibition.

A panel discussion and Q&A will take place from 3:00- 5:00 and will focus on opportunities for Universal Design. Panelists include:

Steven Landau, Research Director, Touch Graphics
Sarah Litvin, Senior Education Associate for Exhibit Development, Lower East Side Tenement Museum (2008- 2013)
Paul Orselli, President and Chief Instigator, POW! and blogger ExhibiTricks
Phillip Tiongson, Interactive Designer and co-founder, Potion
Moderator: Barbara Stratyner, exhibition development consultant and author, outsidethemuseumblog

This event will be held in a wheelchair accessible space. ASL-interpretation and CART are available upon request, in advance of the workshop by the deadline listed. Please email museumaccess@gmail.com with questions or requests for accommodations by January 26, 2018.
