For more than a quarter century, the Internet Archive has been building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, people with print disabilities, and the general public. Our mission as an independent nonprofit enterprise is to provide “Universal Access to All Knowledge,” and we welcome users and supporters from throughout the world.

The Internet Archive began from the dream of Brewster Kahle, a young computer scientist, of building a “Library of Everything” for the digital age. This library, an “Archive,” would contain all of the published works of humankind, continue to evolve and grow through the ages, and be 100% free to anyone and everyone in the world. This dream of a digital library became a reality in 1996. It was created as a nonprofit and named the Internet Archive.

Today, the Internet Archive is one of the world’s largest digital repositories—a massive, comprehensive online library which includes:

735 billion web pages
41 million texts in the collections (books, documents, magazines, etc.)
14.7 million audio recordings (including 240,000 live concerts from 8,300 bands)
7 million videos (including 2.4 million news programs available for closed-caption search)
4.4 million images
1600 educational items
890,000 software titles, many emulatable

The Internet Archive is pleased to invite you to the first webinar for our supporters and friends in Japan. During this online event, Brewster Kahle, the Archive’s founder, will tell you about our mission, Archive staff will introduce our vast and diverse collections, and friends of the Archive in Japan will show you some exciting IA-related projects involving Japan. This will be a unique opportunity to learn more about the Archive, to meet other Archive supporters and users in Japan, and to think about how you can use and help the Archive even more.
