We will begin with a discussion over the current statistics of Anxiety and Depression in the U.S.A and locally. Next, we will look at the types of Anxiety and origin. Next, we will look at the types of Depression and origin. Finally, we will look at contraindications and benefits of massage when working with a client who may have Anxiety and/or Depression.

     Gloria C. Mathiesen, MA, LPC, C-DBT, LMT, E-RYT 200, Certified Aromatherapist, Usui Reiki Master/Teacher graduated in 1997 from Irene Gauthier’s Myomassology Institute located in her home state of Michigan. She has been providing therapeutic massage services ever since. She has fine-tuned her bodywork practice to meet the needs of individuals who suffer from chronic pain, trauma, and stress related issues.

     In 2007, Gloria took her massage experience and expertise into the education realm and helped develop and instruct Pima Community College’s Therapeutic Massage Program in Tucson, Arizona as an adjunct faculty member. She continued this journey and became a national provider for NCBTMB in 2010. Gloria has provided continuing education for Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, along with public self-care workshops.

     In addition to her Massage & Bodywork training, Gloria received her MA in Mental Health Counseling from Bowling Green State University, Ohio and is a Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Ohio and a Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Arizona. She has also continued her education in the mental health field by receiving certifications in Marriage & Family Therapy, Compulsive & Addictive Behavior, and Play Therapy from Capella University. She currently runs a virtual private practice, specializing in trauma work and has completed a 50-Hour Certification of Completion in EMDR.

     In 2018 she completed a certification program in aromatherapy and in February of 2019 became a registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance. All of her modalities, trainings, and studies continue to interweave the connection between the mind and body and how to best build resilience for today’s modern high stress lifestyle.

     Gloria’s passion focuses her development on bridging the mind and body with unique courses and public workshops addressing topics such as PTSD, eating disorders, addiction, chronic pain, and trauma.
