Umbraco Accessibility Team

The Umbraco A11Y team is back with the Umbraco accessibility awareness day – as part of the Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

There are still knowledge gaps around accessibility issues and many barriers and hurdles still exist when building and developing websites. UMBRAAD is an opportunity for Umbraco and web practitioners to get together, learn and discuss accessibility in general, find out what’s happening with Umbraco accessibility and to pick up any tools and techniques that may help them improve the accessibility of their sites.

The online event is open to all involved in designing, building and creating websites and attendees do not have to have worked exclusively with Umbraco. It’s also open to anyone with an interest in accessibility and the web, from users to marketers to those who commission websites.


GAAD was founded by a Los Angeles-based web developer called Joe Devon who wrote a single blog post that caught the attention of an accessibility professional called Jennison Asunction who, after reading it, contacted Joe and they joined forces to develop the GAAD event.

The Umbraco A11Y community team formed in 2019 after a group of Umbraco developers recognised that in order to improve Umbraco’s usability, a focus was needed within the back office of Umbraco’s CMS to make sure that that absolutely no-one is excluded using Umbraco in the way it is intended.

Agenda

Creating user stories with included accessibility information is hard. Is so much accessibility detail added into each story describing how a developer creates it? or just reference WCAG and hope that by osmosis the requirements appear in the finished feature? Accessibility Acceptance Criteria (AAC) are one solution to this problem. AACs are broad accessibility criteria applied when user stories are created. Instead of developer-focused, they’re BA-focused. And describe key behaviours a finished feature needs to display – an outcome, but they don’t go so far as in specifying how to do it. Instead, they act as guard rails allowing a developer to implement the feature in any possible way, if the outcome is met.

Mastering the Art of Accessibility Acceptance Criteria for better user stories

When we focus our attention on building accessible front ends for our websites, it can be easy to forget the content managers and site admins. Users who spend their time designing and creating new content for those sites also benefit from a considered and robust approach to accessible design. Designing accessible systems benefits all users but more importantly prevents exclusion. By designing robust, understandable interfaces, we can provide clarity and confidence to users suffering transient or situational impairment. The elderly, the stressed, the inexperienced, can all benefit from an accessible website. A “Publish” button in the back end may be easily understood by most users, but someone who’s dealing with external stressors, or significant pressure at work, or who may just be tired and a bit frazzled that day, could struggle to remember which environment will be affected by that action. Automated Accessibility Testing Within Umbraco

As web developers, we try to make our websites as beautiful and understandable as possible for our users. We use images for decorations, to visualize topics, to illustrate stories, or show our newest products. There are already billions of images on the web, getting more every day. But what would a website look like without any images? What information would we miss? Let us look at cases where images are not visually seen and how screen reader users experience a website with images. This talk explains how to make images more accessible and is a deep dive into the alternative text and more advanced topics like static maps, decorations, and diagrams. Different contexts, meanings, and types of images need different approaches to provide the best experience for users.

A picture says less than a thousand words

You will gain an understanding in to how to think accessible, and make this part of your approach , an understanding of the implications of A, AA and Triple A and hopefully a slightly modified approach to developing.

Learn the rules to break the rules

For those who aren't already convinced explain the why's behind accessible design. Focus on communication, collaboration, and understanding as opposed to compliance, legal threats, and shame. Share common and not so common accessibility issues and how to avoid them. Describe how to select an automation option if they choose. Discuss the difference between accessibility and work flow issues. Encourage them to leverage existing advocacy groups, reach out to existing social media communities, and make it easier for interested individuals to get involved. Offer myself as a point of contact and take questions.
