Join Nancie King Mertz to find your artistic inspiration with dazzling Fall colors in Rockford, IL—named “The Forest City”. The final day will be at the Anderson Japanese Gardens, a botanical garden encompassing streams, waterfalls and winding pathways. This Pastel-Immersion Workshop will be an extraordinary opportunity to paint with pastels with the beauty of Fall. Short demos will be offered throughout the workshop to help clarify the techniques, as needed.

This is a rare opportunity to paint in gorgeous landscape and return at day’s end to ArtDeTriumph, a European-style retreat for a Happy Hour critique. Lodging is also available at ArtDeTriumph which can accommodate a maximum of eight guests in 4 shared rooms with twin beds, en suite baths.

Day One: 10/5/24 After 8am breakfast, Nancie’s plein air demo will begin at Haight Village, an historic enclave of restored Victorian homes in downtown Rockford. Painting & individual instruction until 4:00pm. Sack lunch at your leisure. Return to ArtDeTriumph for the Happy Hour critique. Dinner can be on-your-own or with the group at a local restaurant.

Day Two: 10/6/24 After 8am breakfast, Nancie’s plein air demo will begin at a downtown location in Rockford. Painting & individual instruction until 4:00pm. Sack lunch at your leisure. Return to ArtDeTriumph for the Happy Hour critique. Dinner can be on-your-own or with the group at a local restaurant.

Day Three: 10/7/24 After 8am breakfast, demo to begin promptly at 10am at Anderson Gardens. Painting & individual instruction allowed until 4:00pm. Return to ArtDeTriumph for the Happy Hour critique. Dinner can be on-your-own or with the group at a local restaurant.

About the Artist: An award winning artist, Nancie has spent her lifetime painting in oil and pastel. Nancie teaches across the US and internationally and is on the faculty for the Plein Air Convention and IAPS Convention. The Jack Richeson Co. offers her Urban Landscape Set and Atmospheric Landscape sets of 80 hand-selected pastels as well as 2 for the coastal palette: Stunning Skies & Water and Lush Coastal Foliage. Streamline Publishing filmed videos of her painting techniques for Lildahl DVD release. She has been named the 2022 Guest of Honor by Art du Pastel en France, with a show of her work featured in Giverny, France in May. She won the coveted IAPS Prix d’Pastel Award along with many Best in Shows around the country.

Nancie has traveled to nearly 25 countries and around the US for inspiration and teaching, however, Chicago remains one of her favorite cities to explore and paint, where she was twice named “Artist of the Year”. Nancie produces approximately 150 paintings each year, many on-site. UART will provide you via email with a full list of materials before the beginning of the workshop.

Refunds: Refunds will be made up to 30 days after processing payment. If a cancellation is made during this time, a $20.00 processing fee will be withheld from the cost of the workshop. Cancellations less than 14 days before a workshop is scheduled to begin will NOT be refunded unless of an extreme emergency and will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Workshop cancellations: If class is cancelled due to low enrollment, UART will provide a full refund to the attendee.

Lunches and meals: ArtDeTriumph will offer a full breakfast at 8am each morning for all before class begins. Also a sack lunch is included in the price of lodging ($375) and the meal-plan for locals is $75 (breakfast, sack lunch, Happy Hour). If opting for “no-food”, locals will have the choice of bringing food for lunch, or to go to a nearby restaurant on lunch break. The Anderson Gardens has a lovely restaurant, Fresco, on the premises, overlooking the Gardens. When downtown, you’ll find many good options for lunch.

Refreshments, wine and soft drinks will be served during the Happy Hour critique at ArtDeTriumph (included in both plans).
