Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Are you interested in learning how to code, but not sure if it's right for you?

This Try Coding Saturday is a one-day program from the Turing School in partnership with Austin employer, Express Scripts, that will expose you to the basics of the Front-End Engineering aspect of computer programming. Express Scripts is on a mission to improve lives by making medicine safer, more affordable and accessible for the 83 million patients we serve. To achieve this, they rely on their workforce to bring authentic yet endless variety of experiences, ideas and passions to their work.

In one day, you'll learn the basics of front-end engineering. We'll cover HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

You'll learn how to create, style, and add interactivity to web pages. By the end of the day, you'll build a game from scratch that runs in the browser.

Throughout the day, you'll also learn about our community and culture, mission and values.

Food and drinks will be served.

You'll have an opportunity to show off work that you're proud of. You'll also receive helpful feedback on how to improve your code from our instructors.

We'll have a lunch-time Q&A with Jeff Casimir, Executive Director of the Turing School and Zane Milakovic, Sr. Manager/UI Engineering at Express Scripts, so you can ask any questions about software development, the Turing program, Express Scripts employment opportunities and culture, and how to start your technical career.

After Event

If you complete the course and decide to apply to Turing School, you'll be welcome to skip the application and move immediately to the interview component of the admissions process.

You'll also receive $500 off the cost of your tuition if you're accepted.

Questions? Contact Erin Williams at erin@turing.io

1. Do I need to bring a computer?

You will need a computer for this class. It does not matter what the operating system is as long as you are able to access the internet through a browser. However, if you do not have one, a limited number of loaner computers are available for the class. Contact erin@turing.io if you need to reserve a loaner.

2. Does this mean Turing is coming to Austin?

As of now, Turing has no plans to expand beyond Denver. We're hoping you learn something new and consider relocating for 7 months to join us in Colorado. Given the relationships Turing is bridging with Austin-based employers, you could return back to Austin to seek job opportunities.

3. Where do I park?

There is a parking deck with primarily all visitor parking directly adjacent to the building.

4. How do access the event space?

Take the elevator to the 5th floor and make a left. There is no security to enter the building or elevator.

5. I want to attend but I can't afford it. Are there any scholarships available?

We are offering scholarships on a limited basis for students with financial need. Please contact erin@turing.io for more information.

6. When should I arrive for the Try Coding Saturday?

Please arrive by 9:45 on Saturday morning to register.

7. What if I'm interested in Back-End Engineering?

We have a other weekend courses that cover Back-End Engineering. You can check our upcoming courses here.
