Event description

Are you interested in learning how to code, but not sure if it's right for you?

Try Coding is a two-day program from the Turing School that will expose you to the basics of programming.

During the first day, you'll learn the basics of Ruby—a popular programming language for building web applications and writing back-end code.

We'll cover how to navigate around your computer using the terminal, read and write files, and write your own command line applications. By the end of the day, you'll have built your very own program to post tweets and read timelines from Twitter.

On the second day, you'll learn the basics of front-end engineering. We'll cover HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

You'll learn how to create, style, and add interactivity to web pages. By the end of the day, you'll build a game from scratch that runs in the browser.

Throughout the weekend, you'll also learn about our community and culture, mission and values. You'll participate in a Gear Up session, designed to help us as a community think through and solve tough challenges in the tech world.

Food and drinks will be served.

Over the course of the weekend, you'll have an opportunity to show off work that you're proud of. You'll also receive helpful feedback on how to improve your code from our instructors.

We'll even have a Q&A panel with current Turing School students and alumni so you can ask any questions about software development, our program, and how to start your technical career.

After Event

If you complete the two-day course and decide to apply to Turing School, you'll be welcome to skip the application and move immediately to the interview component of the admissions process.

You'll also receive $500 off the cost of your tuition if you're accepted.

Questions? Contact Michael Dao at

1. Do I need to bring a computer?

You will need a computer for this class. For this weekend, it does not matter what the operating system is as long as you are able to access the internet through a browser. However, if you do not have one, a limited number of loaner computers are available for the class. Contact for more info.

2. Where do I park?

Paid parking is available in the area. Lots run between $8 and $15 per day. Meters are free on Sundays.

3. I cannot attend both days. Can I attend for just one?

While attending both days will give you an idea of what each program covers, it is ok to attend just one day. Contact if this applies to you.

4. Is the space accessible?

Yes. There is an elevator to our space and all classrooms are accessible.

5. I want to attend but I can't afford it. Are there any scholarships available?

We are offering scholarships on a limited basis for students with financial need. Please contact for more information.

6. What are the actual hours each day? When should I arrive for the Try Turing weekend?

Each day runs from 10 am to 4 pm. Please arrive by 9:45 on Saturday morning to register.
